Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

Shakespeare's best Villain

Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare's Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare's most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works.

The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

Really, if you enjoy Shakespeare's plays, then you'll enjoy Othello. The actual read-ability of this digital version is excellent, so I'd recommend it above other digital versions.

Boom!

I wussed out and checked this book out of my local library so I figure I at least owe Ric a positive review. I'm a total noob DIY film hobbyist who been noticing how truly awful my sound is. What's sad it that I'm an fairly experienced recording engineer. It's clear to me now that location sound is a totally different ball game. This book is absolutely loaded with very practical tips and techniques. So many film books are written by "professors" and "instructors" with only a few credits to their name. If Ric Viers isn't an experienced journeyman, he's doing a amazing job of concealing it. I just needed some basic points about mics and techniques and sure got them but there's quite a lot of valuable advice for those who are more career-oriented. Sure, he uses humor but this book means business. The chapter on the film business and working on a set should be priceless to freelancers in any number of creative fields. And best of all, the author doesn't pretend that his book tells you everything you need to know. There's no substitute for real experience. Bravo.

Highly recommended for the non-sound professional, hobbyist, or filmmaker just starting out.

Ric Viers has a very inviting, laid back writing style. While this book may contain much the same information you'd find in a textbook, he wrote it as if he were having a pleasant conversation about location sound with the reader. That makes this otherwise dry material a real page turner.

I would say that this is a must-read for anyone aspiring to a job as a "sound guy" in the film industry. I'd also recommend it to non-audio film and video professionals so that they can get up to speed on what their colleagues in sound are doing and why.

If you're a video blogger or a video making hobbyist like me, I would not only recommend this book, but I'd say it's your duty to pick up a copy. The techniques in this book apply just as well to the affordable (read: cheap) equipment that we all know and love as they do to the high-end gear used in the film industry. I can almost guarantee you'd be better off buying a mic that's $15 cheaper and putting that extra cash towards this book.

The book is also from 2012. That means that it discusses equipment that's still current, and that you can buy today (oftentimes right here on Amazon -- but they didn't pay me to say that).

My only gripe is so minor that the review doesn't even lose a star: Ric does often repeat himself on certain points. It's probably intentional reiteration to ensure that the reader hasn't missed a key element, however it's noticeable to the point of "breaking the fourth wall". If books had walls. It may not be the best metaphor, but there you have it.

I bought the paperback version rather than the digital. The quality of the printing is overall high. The cover has a nice matte feel to it, and inside the paper stock is thick but not problematically so. There are plenty of illustrations and images, but not so many that you'd feel cheated at having bought a picture book.

All in all, a great read!

Great informational book!

This read is a no brainer for people in the location sound field looking to brush up or renforce their knowledge. Very easy read, not overly complex. The only reason I did not give the book five stars is the lack of information on lav placement and mounting techniques. I understand that audio from the boom will always give the best and most realistic perspective, but most work I do in the field heavily relies on the use of lav mics.

Overall a must read for film pros.

A Samurai's Tale is a juvenile novel that has the potential to please adults. It is not really a coming-of-age story, but does trace the life of an orphan from a boy to a young adult. Events in the boy's life are set against and entwined with the historical background of the samurai of Kai province during the last years of Takeda Shingen's life, and so covers some of the same ground as the Kurosawa film Shadow Warrior. The character is the son of one of Uesugi Kenshin's samurai and is brought to work in the stables of a Takeda clan general following a battle. Eventually, the boy works up from the stables to become one of the general's trusted samurai, and the book ends on something of a cliff-hanger after the famous battle of Nagashino.

The book is unquestionably a juvenile novel and lacks graphic violent or sexual content. The storyline is essentially episodic and lacks complexity, such as subplots, beyond the historical background material. The writing is mostly centered on action and dialogue without much attention to description, and the prose is slightly simplistic. However, despite all that, it turned out to be a fairly engaging book. The author lived in the area where the events are set, and an attempt was clearly made to keep the story grounded in time and place. Written in the first person in the form of a memoir, it might have been easy to lapse into anachronism, but instead the author has done a good job of creating a believable character who has reactions and outlook appropriate to (a) a relatively sensitive and reflective boy, living in (b) feudal Japan. To me, the book feels like the kernel of a great epic story. The boy's inner life, judgement, and narrative voice are balanced and appealing enough that a great number of scenes, plot elements, and descriptive passages could have been kneaded in.

The negative reviews of this book on Amazon are mostly from young students who found the end particularly boring. This is interesting because the latter part of the book is where historical events come to the fore, and the author spends more time on the character's attempts to navigate the labyrinth of manners and duties expected of him due to his social position. For me, this was where the book became most interesting, and it was the beginning chapters, recounting friendships and adventures, that left me cold.

No one would mistake this book for great literature, and it's also not vapid entertainment. So, what is the point? I'm not sure. As the boy attempts to become worthy of being appointed as a samurai, he idealizes and adopts the mores of his culture, in turn developing into an honest and self-reliant, yet not naive or shallow, adult. Despite this moralistic bent, I am interested enough in the characters and plot to coninue with the sequel, The Boy and the Samurai. Also, one can never have enough versions of Chushingura, so the author's will get added to my collection.

Of note, before the 2005 Sandpiper edition of this book, there was a 1984 paperback edition by Houghton Mifflin that I can't find now son Amazon. As some childrens' books are revised (i.e., censored) these days for ideological reasons, I would try to get the 1984 version if possible. I can't imagine what would be objectionable in the original, but I can't imagine changing objectionable books to begin with, so who knows.

This story displays a large cast. Being an ambitious young orphan, Taro hopes to follow his late father's footsteps and become a samurai. Fortunately, Taro has numerous mentors throughout his life, including a cook, a messenger and even a servant. While serving his lord as the distributor of rations Taro meets a young girl and immediately falls in love with her. This tale of a boy who struggles to achieve the highest military rank takes in a war torn Japan during the golden age of the samurai.
As the story progresses the reader follows the hero through his varied adventures. When a rival family kills his mother and siblings are killed, Taro is spared because of his bravery which is prominent throughout the story. He starts out a lowly cook's boy but later goes on to become a stable boy, messenger, and guardian / distributor of the armies rations. While Taro is the cook's helper, his mentor teaches him to be content with who he is and what he is doing as long as it is morally correct. However, Taro continues to strive to become a samurai.

Taro achieves his life goal. His name is changed. He engages in combat. the young man is very pleased with these knightly privileges. Sadly, his best friend dies in battle, and so Taro learns to respect life. After his lord is vanquished, Taro is reduced to rags , but when the story takes a final turn he forgets his sad state.
This is an enjoyable book. Being equally educational and pleasurable the reader is drawn into Taro's world. It is a typical life story with several subplots, making it hard to follow the main story line. Unfortunately, the reading is slow at times but mostly this story action-packed and not easy to put down.

About the Author
H. Michael Newman began working in the facilities group at Cornell University in the 1970s after ten years in the aviation industry. He is currently the Manager of Cornell University's Building Automation and Control Systems Integration group within Facilities Services and an ASHRAE Fellow and Life Member. In the control systems industry, he is known as "the Father of BACnet." He presided as the chairman of the effort to create the BACnet standard and has been involved with updates and improvements ever since.

Excellent read, with all the details. A must read for those new to this field.

The author, Michael Newman is considered to be the grandfather of BACnet, after many years he has kept pace with the development of his original idea. There are few who can claim such an accomplishment. The book is an easy read for anyone with an interest in automation protocols and from an unbiased source.

I bought this book so I could understand and write code to the standard. However it does not provide much information about it. If you really want to know about the programming aspect, Buy a book on ASN.1 and the standard itself. This book would only be worth while if it was $20 or so.

I have always been amused by Steampunk and fascinated about it. Drawing,Sketching & Painting are my hobbies and I was looking out for a book based on drawing techniques for Steampunk.This particular book is very different and fresh from the other drawing books I have ever bought. It tells us about the history of Steampunk. It increased my knowledge about Steampunk as well as made me learn about the techniques for drawing it. The Two And Only

A man-on-the-street interview descends into a discussion of the many uses for cranberries. A spelling bee begins to look suspicious when one of the contestants gets words like "who" while the others get "interfenestration." Celebrity chef Mary McGoon unveils a recipe for "Frozen Ginger Ale Salad."

Visiting the laboratory of the beloved Mr. Science (brought to you by the Philanthropic Council to Make Things Nicer), little Jimmy Schwab watches another fascinating experiment with the awe of a child, a very sheltered child:

"A candle! Holy suffering catfish. Wait'll I tell all the kids at school I've seen one of those."

Bridging the gap between the Jack Benny Show and "Saturday Night Live," Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding were a comedy team who worked on radio and television from 1946 to the late 1980s, honing a unique brand of whimsy that managed to be both genial and bizarre. This 1975 book brings together about 50 top-quality Bob & Ray sketches.

They looked like bank presidents, eschewed profanity and sex references, and were somewhat out of place in their own time and more so today, with their middle-of-the-road, Norman Rockwell sensibility. Yet few people in comedy don't know of Bob & Ray and speak highly of them as trailblazers in the mold of Lenny Bruce or Monty Python. Kurt Vonnegut, in his introduction to this book, notes you can't call this "the cream of the cream of their jokes," given the "amazing evenness" of their larger body of work. But you do get a thorough appreciation with this engagingly re-readable book of why Bob & Ray were so much fun.

By the time of this book, the first of three such collections published during their career, Bob & Ray were adapting slowly to changing times, offering parodies of "The Waltons" and "Baretta" to go with their older, more established sketch material, like the soap opera "Mary Backstayge, Noble Wife," which featured a show-biz family so inept they are seen here leaving entertainment entirely to start their own restaurant with a menu consisting entirely of toast. (Not French toast, though, that's too hard.)

Like Vonnegut says, the ineptitude of the characters presented by Bob & Ray was a running theme of their comedy, and a big part of their charm, along with the fact that for all their bumbling, nothing really tragic seemed to befall anyone, apart maybe from the woman who got caught trying to snip a lock of Walter Cronkite's mustache, who gets what she deserved.

"Write If You Get Work" comes complete with great Mort Drucker illustrations and an actual Newsday restaurant review of "The House Of Toast" which is as funny as any of the sketches. As for the sketches themselves, they work not only for laughs but as mind-twisting exercises into making the impossible sound hopelessly mundane. How does one make a career out of impersonating food and drink, anyway?

The work of Bob & Ray has been sadly out of view since Ray's death in 1990, and a reprint of this book would gladden the hearts of many, including many top comic minds whose own copies have become dog-eared or stolen. If that aristocrats joke deserved an entire movie, these guys deserve at least a reprint.

Rhett and Clementine have been best friends since they were little and it all started with a note..

She responded with a “Maybe” and that was the beginning of our friendship.

Clemmie is ready to move on with her life. All these years she has worried about studying now she wants to date. She has secretly had a crush on Rhett since she was little but he never saw her as anything but a friend. She was saving her self for the perfect person so she decided to start dating.

Rhett is a player, a womanizer, he's hot as hell and everyone wants him. His best friend is Clemmie, she has always been by his side. No one understands their relationship. When Clemmie starts dating a guy Rhett doesn't understand why he is having the feelings about his best friend that he is.

Will acting on these feeling ruin a great friendship? Or will it make the relationship so much better?

I have read everyone one of JS Coopers book and I swear they just keep getting better! She never disappoints!

Love me some Rhett!!!

He is a true southern "gentleman" who would do anything for his best friend Clementine "Clemmie" which has expanded the last 15 years. He is a man whore but he makes sure that every girl knows he is not relationship material. Rhett is a spoiled rich kid who loves women, but won't commit to anyone except his friendship to Clemmie which he sometimes takes advantage of but she loves him all the same. No one is allowed to come between their friendship even when they try. I love Rhett he is hot, cocky, and loyal. He never realized that he loved Clemmie and they had the perfect committed relationship without the benefits of sex, until Clemmie decides it's time to go out and start dating. Rhett will not let anyone come between him and what he wants and what he wants is Clemmie. Will he get her or will he have to settle for friendship only?

Holy Hotness!!!

Ms. Cooper, I have to say, you may have the best taste in choosing a cover for this book. I think I may be in love with the gorgeous model on the cover of your book. I need a poster sized picture of this cover so I can stare at him and daydream!!! He is sooo the perfect "Rhett". I kept seeing the guy from the cover as I was reading about Rhett in the book. The character names were interesting (Clementine, Rhett, Penelope); very unique and very unforgettable. I feel you captured typical behavior for twenty something year old guys; always thinking about sex, clueless, and mostly try to deny their feelings and emotions. I totally loved Clementine and Rhett; they were so cute together and had great chemistry. My only complaint is the number of typos and misspelled / misplaced words throughout the book - that just really got on my nerves. Other than that, I truly enjoyed reading about Clementine and Rhett.
So Ms. Cooper, will there be a sequel? Will we find out how life goes for them in Boston? Will their HEA continue forever? Please, Ms. Cooper, keep us informed. "Inquiring minds want to know"!!!!!!!
