Joshua S. Goldstein, is an associate of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University and a leading expert on war. His books include "International Relations and War and Gender: How Gender Shapes the War System and Vice Versa". He lives in Amherst, MA.

Jon C. Pevehouse is Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin. He has published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, International Organization, the Journal of Politics and the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

Great Introductory Text

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.

Too Expensive

As a prof, I used this book in my intro IR course for many years. After not teaching the course for four years, I went to order it for this Fall, and found it cost 120 bucks. I just can't bring myself to do this to the students. The book is excellent, but not worth the price. I will not be assigning it.

WAY too expensive

I've TA'd for this class for 2 years now, and the publishers have just spiked the price. There's no reason that this 150-page book should cost more than $30. This is exploitation, pure and simple. Professors please do not assign this book.

Update: When I took this class, I paid $5 for a used copy of the 5th edition. Now you can get older editions for $0.01. As long as you're comfortable with a little insecurity, I'd almost recommend buying an older edition and saving yourself $100. They're virtually the same thing, just without a picture of Psy on the front.

Lencioni is one of those gurus that has sold millions of books, none about emotional intelligence (EQ). As Lencioni proclaims in the foreword, he's no EQ expert, but he sees everyday how critical a skill it is to have and he's so enthusiastic about this book because it's the first he's read that actually shows you how to increase your EQ and apply it in your life.

THE JOURNEY
This chapter opens with a riveting story of a surfer who is attacked by a great white shark in California. I won't spoil it by telling you how, but the story is a great illustration of the power of emotion and how important it is to understand and manage our emotions. This chapter also illustrates how our brains are wired to react to events emotionally before our reason kicks in, and it lays the groundwork for the process by which the rest of the book will teach you to increase your EQ.

THE BIG PICTURE
This chapter teaches what EQ is and what it isn't. For example, a lot of people mistakenly think that EQ is a part of your personality. To the contrary EQ is separate from your personality, just as it is separate from your intellect, or IQ. It begins to build your understanding of emotions by showing what the five core emotions look like in varying degrees of intensity. Next the authors fun and engaging approach explains studies that illustrate how important EQ is in daily living. They show how your EQ impacts things like your tolerance for change, how you manage stress, even how much money you make!

-DIGGING IN: MY EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ACTION PLAN-
If you haven't already, by this point in the book you need to open the orange envelope inside the back cover and retrieve the unique passcode that lets you go online to take the Emotional Intelligence Appraisal test. I'd actually heard of this test (it's the most widely used EQ test out there), so I thought it was pretty cool that they let you take it for free with the book. In addition to revealing your EQ scores, your test results guide you through the areas you need to work on improving the most. This chapter helps you to develop your plan of attack, including the action plan where you actually record what it is your going to do and by when.

-SELF-MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES-
(ACTUALLY THERE IS A CHAPTER OF STRATEGIES FOR EACH SKILL, BUT I'LL JUST DESCRIBE THIS ONE)
This section of the book has 66 strategies to increase your EQ. Each strategy is well-detailed (most 2-3 pages) and something that you can begin doing immediately. Your test results tell you which EQ skill you need to work on the most (for me it was Self-management), as well as which of the chapter's strategies will increase your ability in that skill the most. I thought this part was pretty cool. Basically, the test analyzed my score profile and picked the three strategies that would improve my biggest weaknesses in self-management. One of the strategies it suggested, Breathe Right, hit the nail on the head. I'm not one of these people that needs to take a deep breath to calm down and stop being angry, which is good because that's NOT what the strategy is teaching. Actually, it illustrates how some of us, when left to our own devices, breathe too shallow, which deprives some of the higher (rational) areas of the brain of the oxygen needed to keep us completely calm and focused. So now, whenever I need to clear my head, think on my feet at work, make a tough decision, figure out what I should get my wife for her birthday, etc. I use this breathing strategy, and I'm continually amazed by how quickly it makes me calm and focused. Anyway, that's just one self-management strategy, but I thought it'd be useful for you to see what one is like in detail.

-EPILOGUE--JUST THE FACTS: A LOOK AT THE LATEST DISCOVERIES IN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE-
This epilogue is quite interesting. The authors' company is a think tank that has tested more than half a million people worldwide, and they share some of the more interesting conclusions from their data that didn't show up earlier in the book. For example, women outscore men in overall EQ, but the sexes have an equal ability in self-awareness (men fall short because they do less with the emotional information they take in). Anyhow, there are studies of EQ differences across various generations (Boomers vs. Millenials is really interesting), in different job titles (CEO's have the lowest EQ in the workforce!), and even US vs. China (our new, big economic competitor).

-DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR READING GROUPS-
This last appendix has some great questions for discussion. I'm not in a book club, but my wife read the book and we talked about some of these questions and it led to some really interesting discussions.

Enables Success

This book is unlike any I've ever come across in its ability to enable me to do great things. The book states that it has a single purpose--increasing my EQ--and it accomplished this without a hitch. How? It has a self-contained, step-by-step, program that was customized to my score profile after I went online and used the included pass code to access an emotional intelligence test. I learned which areas where holding me back and which of the book's 66 strategies would increase my emotional intelligence the most.

The strategies are broken down according to the four emotional intelligence skills:

* Self-Awareness
* Self-Management
* Social Awareness
* Relationship Management

The strategies continue to be really helpful. I catch myself using them all the time. Some are counterintuitive, while others are common sense yet hard to apply consistently until following the techniques from the book. The book also illustrates stories of real people with high or low emotional intelligence in each of the four skills.

I bought the book because of the Patrick Lencini foreword and the endorsements from some of my favorite authors (Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, and the Dalai Lama), and I'm glad I did!

I have read better

Although this book talks about how emotions effect your decision making process, a lot of progress is dependent on you finding a "mentor.". I did not find this groundbreaking or very helpful. Maybe it would have been better if they had an online mentor blog or something, but they insist you need to get a mentor, and I was not able to find one I wanted to follow!

The most authoritative Decision Analysis book

The core decision analysis community had been waiting for this book for many years. Amazon ran out of stock the day that they mailed the book to those who pre-ordered it. These comments are for readers who are interested in decision analysis but may be not that familiar with the authors or the book background. The list of its forty chapters is included at the end of these comments.

Ronald Howard is a key founder of the discipline and his writing, teaching and application of decision analysis has shaped the discipline. In addition, he is a most clear, logical and even fun to read writer. Ali Abbas is a major decision analysis scholar and innovator, and the Director of CREATE at USC.

This book is the outgrowth of the course notes that Ronald Howard developed and used for teaching decision analysis at Stanford over more than forty year. It is great that "the manuscript" is now published in an extended and enriched version.

The forty chapters of the book cover a wide range of interrelated concepts and techniques. A subset of the chapters was designed to be understood by a general audience. The book includes many other chapters that go deep into the underpinnings of the discipline. The book is written as a textbook but it is also a reference book.

The book uses simple examples carefully designed to learn a lot from them and logically builds a network of useful concepts from the "five rules of actional thought" (Howard's axiomatic basis for the discipline.) It includes a few exercises at the end of each chapter but it does not include a bibliography.

Amazon does not include (at this time) the list of chapters or the recommendations by the authors for different types of readers, but you can see them at the Pearson's sites that will be distributing the paperback Global Edition. It captures not only the technical foundations of decision analysis, it captures Professor Howard's expertise in teaching the material. He knows how to make ideas simple and clear. The Standard, but somewhat out of date commentary

This is the standard text and facsimile on the Dresden. Thompson was one of the greatest experts on the Maya and for the time, did an excellent job. However as we can now read the glyphs with greater reliability, some of the interpretations are out of date. This should be part of any serious student of Maya Codices, but reference should be made to other more up-to-date titles. Although this is out of print, The Fondo de Cultura Economica (FCE) is due to re-publish soon an updated version with a new commentary.

This commentary is required reading for any student of the Maya codices. It was the best available resource at the time of publication. Even the ideas that are out of fashion by present thinking are worth considering. The facsimile is a full-color reproduction, based off the Förstemann edition, but re-colored by Thompson.

I'd love to go sailing with Dylan!!

Like some other reviewers, I'm completely addicted to the Sullivans... I pre-ordered this one and read it all within 24 hours of getting it. Dylan was unexpectedly sweet and I loved him from the start. I'd sure love to go sailing with him!! Grace was the perfect complement to him... beautiful (of course!) but smart, strong, and independent... maybe TOO independent! (But that's what makes the story!)

Like all of Bella's books, there are some wonderful, hot and steamy scenes in this story, along with just about the right amount of conflict to triumph over. My only complaint would be that when we reached the story's climax, it actually ended a little too quickly for me! The story was so well-woven that it just seemed as if I needed a little more substance as it wrapped up...

Still, it's a very satisfying read. Really fun to see the other Sullivans coming back into the story in various ways... that's what makes the series so addicting, after all! If you've read the others in the series, this is a do-not-miss, but if you haven't, you'll enjoy this more if you start with the first one - or at the very least start with Rafe and the other Seattle Sullivans.

Another beautiful Sullivan!

Ok- started and finished today. I could NOT put it down. Dylan Sullivan - sailor and Boat builder. An amazing man raised with/by a phenomenal family- meets Grace and her son, Mason when she wants to write about him for a magazine.

Grace has been burned and has a wall around her heart. Leave it to a Sullivan to tear it down. Their chemistry is on fire...they have that special magnetic relationship from day one. They are nice people with a great passionate fire burning beneath the surface. And together, they are quite a team.

This family- I love it. I wish I knew a family like theirs. I am hooked on this series and as always, Bella Andre writes impeccably. It's sweet, loving, happy and scorching hot, of course. She is one of the best!

Great book-- hope more family members come out of the woodwork so this series doesn't end soon!!

Bella Does it Again!

Bella does it again, with a sweet installment in her Sullivan's series. Dylan has waited to find love as he watched his siblings and cousins fall for the real thing. But when he sees it, there is no waffling on his part. He falls quickly, and hard and spends the rest of the book proving to his lady love that he is the real thing, and he thinks the world of her, and her sweet son, Mason. A fast read as you get caught up in Dylan's story, and then you'll want to go back and read both Mia and Ian's stories, so you recall once again, how those two tales fit with this one. If you love good storytelling, romance, and in this case, boats, you won't want to miss, I Love How You Love Me!
