Unlocking your creative abilities.
By Inkhorn
I bought this book years ago, and it taught me how to dramatically improve my drawing skills.

I believe people who are blocked from drawing well will get the most from this book. More accomplished artists may benefit as well by understanding better how the process works.

It shows you how to look at things differently, and uses different techniques to enable you to bypass your left (logical) brain, and access your right brain, (your subconscious mind), hence the title.

Instead of using left brain- right brain theory to describe this, in my view the more correct description would be to learn to access your subconscious mind which functions at a deeper level, while reducing the way in which your conscious mind interferes with the creative process.

Your brain has four levels of consciousness, beta which is normal waking state, alpha which is a relaxed meditative state such as when you are about to go to sleep, theta which is a deeper state associated with creativity and light sleep, and delta which is deep sleep.

Normally, your brain shows shows some activity at all these levels. Artists and other creative people are able to access the creative mental state more easily.

Here is an example of how the process works.

If you try to draw a chair you may have a definite idea in your logical mind of how a chair should be, so when you draw you are thinking 4 legs, a seat and a back. You know all the legs are the same length, and therefore you may draw that way.

This can interfere with you doing a good drawing, because each leg from an artistic viewpoint is longer or shorter depending on the distance from your eye, so you have to learn how to use your vision to see it differently.

This can interfere with you doing a good drawing, because each leg from an artistic viewpoint is longer or shorter depending on the distance from your eye, so you have to learn how to use your imagination instead.

In this book there is a picture of something such as a chair or a person's face, and you may draw it as it is. You can also use a picture from a newspaper or magazine. This represents your current skill level.

Now, turn the picture upside down and draw the picture upside down. As you do this drawing, you may notice that you are producing a more accurate copy of the picture. This is because you are now using different skills. I was amazed at the results. This is so simple to do. Try it yourself and discover how easy it is.

There are other examples and illustrations to show you how to see pictures differently, and use space, light and shade, optical illusions and so forth.

As you become more experienced you will learn how to use your new skills automatically. I particularly enjoyed using pictures of movie stars, turning them upside down, copying them, and then doing it again right side up.

I have referred several people who would love to draw well to this book. If you are not as artistic as you would like to be, and were to follow the exercises in this book there is no reason your skill level should not improve dramatically. Naturally, the more you practice, the more you improve. If it worked for me, it can work for you. This is pretty easy.

Imagine drawing anything you want to draw completely accurately, and with incredible detail, subtlety and nuance just like a professional artist. This potential is just a few clicks away. If it worked for me, it can work for you, as my natural drawing was ability not good.

This 4th edition is a disappointment.
By Alyce Humphrey
The '89 edition is far superior to the 4th. In the 4th, the paper is thin enough to see through. Many of the drawing instructions are reproduced far too light and hard to see, much less to study. The chapter on color is GONE. Most of the interesting and informative margin notes are gone (though the space is still there), and the few that are there are in print so tiny it's not easy to read. In chapter 6, the student is advised to lift lights to create shadows, but this is not really taught until chapter 10 on lights and shadows. Why is this thrust on the student in chapter 6 when they haven't been taught it yet and may end up doing it in an incorrect way? And last, the index is incomplete, and I had to go through many pages in order to find things, since all the pages for a subject were not listed. The '89 edition is excellent.

Impossible to Read
By Grumpy Whiny Old Man
I ordered this book because I could not find my copy of the Revised Edition, a book that is worth reading and studying over and over. I thought so much of the book and its lessons that I decided to order the newest edition. The day before the new edition arrived I found my dog-eared, page-stained copy of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and revisited a couple of my favorite pages.

Today the newest edition arrived. It might be a masterpiece in it's genre, but I'll never know. The type face is so small I, literally, cannot read the side bars, and reading the body text is not much better. The amount of ink used for the impressions is minimal and adds to the difficulties. A book does no good if half of it cannot be read and the other half is difficult to read due to typeface or any other physical limits. A direct comparison of font size between the two books makes it very apparent it isn't just a grumpy whiny old man's grump of the day.

Publisher should be ashamed. If I can read the last edition with no problems I think I should be permitted to read the latest edition just as easily.

The Wisdom of the Hive: The Social Physiology of Honey Bee Colonies, by Thomas D. Seeley

This book is about the inner workings of one of nature's most complex animal societies: the honey bee colony. It describes and illustrates the results of more than fifteen years of elegant experimental studies conducted by the author. In his investigations, Thomas Seeley has sought the answer to the question of how a colony of bees is organized to gather its resources. The results of his research--including studies of the shaking signal, tremble dance, and waggle dance, and other, more subtle means by which information is exchanged among bees--offer the clearest, most detailed picture available of how a highly integrated animal society works. By showing how several thousand bees function together as an integrated whole to collect the nectar, pollen, and water that sustain the life of the hive, Seeley sheds light on one of the central puzzles of biology: how units at one level of organization can work together to form a higher-level entity.

In explaining why a hive is organized the way it is, Seeley draws on the literature of molecular biology, cell biology, animal and human sociology, economics, and operations research. He compares the honey bee colony to other functionally organized groups: multicellular organisms, colonies of marine invertebrates, and human societies. All highly cooperative groups share basic problems: of allocating their members among tasks so that more urgent needs are met before less urgent ones, and of coordinating individual actions into a coherent whole. By comparing such systems in different species, Seeley argues, we can deepen our understanding of the mechanisms that make close cooperation a reality.

(American Bee Journal)

Seeley's well-developed cycle of observation and experiment, modelling, computer simulation and prediction formulation shows an exemplary approach to sociobiology...The book is clearly a labour of love, recounting marvels of integration and making for a pleasing contrast to the spreading orthodoxy of the social insect colony as a cauldron of conflict, where insects stepping out of line are punished or have their eggs eaten. (Ross H. Crozier Nature)

I recommend this book highly to behavioral biologists and all scientist interested in understanding the organization of complex systems, at both the macro- and microscopic levels...[An] important book...It is a labor of love that radiates Seeley's passion both for his beloved honey bees and for the research that can be performed with them to illuminate the mysteries of social life. (Gene E. Robinson American Scientist)

[A] well-written book...contain[ing] a wealth of detail. (Apicultural Abstracts)

They say good scientists are judged not by their answers but by their questions. By this measure Tom Seeley must be amongst the great bee scientists. He has asked the questions whose answers illustrate the great wisdom of the hive...Space here does not allow me to pay proper justice to this marvellous book. Most beekeepers already think their bees are pretty smart--this book will only increase your admiration. A good value textbook and essential reading for all who dare to lecture on honeybee biology. (Beekeeping & Development [UK])

A terrific contribution that will build on the work of Martin Lindauer and Karl von Frisch. Seeley stands on their shoulders, but he is seeing new vistas. Others have asked what bees know, but Seeley explores new ground, asking how bees handle information and how this leads to reallocation of labor in the hive. (Timothy H. Goldsmith, Yale University)

How to make a machine that makes honey
By Lee Kamentsky
Thomas Seeley has written an amazing book that will work for many different types of readers at many levels. The book outlines experiments that Seeley did with prepared hives to demonstrate the system dynamics of how a hive adapts to the resources around it. Seeley's style is easy for a layperson to read with clear charts and pictures. This is a great book to savor; read a chapter, then daydream about how these creatures could be constructed to perform their functions.

I got a lot out of the book. First of all, it's a narrative of Seeley's experimental method; he labels a hive (puts the bees in a hive in a refrigerator, pulls them out one by one and puts identifying tags on each), sets up feeding stations with different concentrations of sugar at different distances, then observes behavior to demonstrate how individual variation in bees optimizes the hive's collection of resources. Second, it's a pretty good introduction to bee physiology and the hive's social system. Seeley describes experiments tracking the individual jobs of bees as they age and, in doing so, he covers how and what the bees do. Third, Seeley reviews and describes the previous literature, giving a history of behavioral study of bees. Finally, he develops his thesis regarding the hive as a system, with parallels to systems theory and studies of hierarchies of organization.

This is a fun read; easy to get through, thought provoking, giving you appreciation for the author's work and for the creatures that are his subject.

One Amazing Book about Bees
By A Customer
This is a special scientific book, for the author tells the reader not only WHAT we know about the inner workings of honey bee colonies, but also HOW we know it. Through simple but graceful writing, accompanied by many diagrams, Seeley takes you on a step-by-step journey through his experimental analysis of how the members of a bee colony work together to gather the nectar, pollen, and water that they need. I think anyone interested in seeing how a human has dissected the complex internal organization of a bee hive will find this a rewarding read. I especially liked chapter 6, where Seeley explains that the bees have several kinds of communication dances, not just the famous waggle dance, to activate more bees for making honey.

...and the wisdom of Tom Seeley
By Diane Almond
While I'd hate to do without most of my 50 plus books on bees and beekeeping, this book would be THE one I'd keep if I could have just one. Comprehensive information that is both fascinating and useful, clearly and even beautifully expressed. More books should retain the context of honey bee colony as social (super) organism.

The Design and Conduct of Meaningful Experiments Involving Human Participants: 25 Scientific Principles, by R. Barker Bausell

Designing and conducting experiments involving human participants requires a skillset different from that needed for statistically analyzing the resulting data. The Design and Conduct of Meaningful Experiments Involving Human Participants combines an introduction to scientific culture and ethical mores with specific experimental design and procedural content. Author R. Barker Bausell assumes no statistical background on the part of the reader, resulting in a highly accessible text. Clear instructions are provided on topics ranging from the selection of a societally important outcome variable to potentially efficacious interventions to the conduct of the experiment itself.

Early chapters introduce the concept of experimental design in an intuitive manner involving both hypothetical and real-life examples of how people make causal inferences. The fundamentals of formal experimentation, randomization, and the use of control groups are introduced in the same manner, followed by the presentation and explanation of common (and later, more advanced) designs. Replete with synopses of examples from the journal literature and supplemented by 25 experimental principles, this book is designed to serve as an interdisciplinary supplementary text for research-methods courses in the educational, psychological, behavioral, social, and health sciences. It also serves as an excellent primary text for methods seminar courses.

Review

"The major purpose is to suggest methods for maximizing the yield of individual experiments. A related objective is to suggest strategies for increasing the methodological rigor with which such experiments are designed and conducted. These worthy objectives are met. This book is unique in content and presentation. It can be used as a textbook or as a supplemental textbook in research classes." --Michalene A King, Doody's Health Science Book Review

From the Back Cover
"I am very impressed with how much information is packed into such a discrete text, and yet without significant sacrifice of clarity. The drawings and supplementary illustrations are quite helpful, as are the appendices. I think the technical sections on fabric and construction are very good, and the photographs of costumes under construction are well executed and really serve the text." -- Stephen C. Judd, Alfred University

"Nicely balanced between design and implementation." -- Harvey Johnson, Geneva College

"A well-organized, first-rate text." -- Konrad Winters, Old Dominion University

"Cunningham's approach to costume design is straight forward and complete. It makes an exceptional source for beginning design students." -- Judy Adamson, University of North Carolina

"The broad range of material covered in a distilled form is the most appealing aspect of this text. Generally, I need to pull from several sources to get the job done." -- Patricia D. Wilson, Florida Atlantic University

"A great text with a comprehensive information system that is easy to understand. Really, it is one of the best texts for undergraduate costume classes." -- Tina Campbell, Marquette University

"Best of all, Ms. Cunningham imparts to her readers an excitement in the process of theater and in the collaborative nature of the art." -- Willene Mangham, College of St. Benedict

"This is the only text I have found that outlines the way to come up with a concise concept statement. This is a difficult idea for young designers to grasp and Ms. Cunningham has outlined the process beautifully!" -- Kerri S. Packard, University of Missouri

"An exceptionally clear text with a fine balance of textual information and graphics." -- Thomas Heiman, Northeast Louisiana University

It's a great beginning
By Wes D.Pearce
Having taught costume design for a number of years, the one thing I can say with certainty is that no book can do everything. I've used the text for a number of years and find it helpful...especially her approach to analyzing the text (I still use her checklists myself). However, a lot of my students are intimidated by some of the illustrations/examples of work. They don't know how to approach sketching for themselves and there are a couple of other texts that are more helpful in aiding in that particular process. Possibly there could be more graphic illustrations of getting from A to D (show us B & C) instead of just the beginning and the end result. The historical research sources and the historical costume outline are good - again some of my students think that she provides a finite list of resources and as with any historical survey the attention is to avoid variations and or anything beyond high fashion. Generally, a strong introductory text but needs supplementary materials (as does any book). No one has complained about the text; that's a good sign.

Required textbook
By Amazon Customer
This was the required textbook for my college's costume design class. Everyone says it is mandatory for anyone considering a career in this profession. The class I took was geared solely towards the stage costume designer and so is this book. Still it is very usefull to those who desire to work in film.

Lake Peipus 1242: Battle of the Ice (Osprey Military Campaign Series, #46), by David Nicolle

Osprey's Campaign title for The battle of Lake Peipus, which took place in 1242 between the Teutonic Knights and the Russian city-state of Novgorod, led by its inspirational leader Alexandre Nevskii. The Teutonic Knights were a powerful military order, backed with the crusading zeal of Europe, the blessing of the Pope and the support of the Holy Roman Emperor. This battle, although little-known in the west, was important in the history of the medieval eastern crusades, the Teutonic defeat having a serious effect on future events. David Nicolle's excellent text examines the Crusade against Novgorod and the fierce fighting around the frozen shores of Lake Peipus.

A detailed account of the battle written somewhat scholarly.
By Melvin Williams
This is a fine edition to the Osprey Campaign Series and typifies the attention to detail and excellent illustrations of the books. I almost gave this title four stars, however, there are some minor shortcomings in the book which lessened it's effect. To be fair to the author, the book itself is probably as well written as the subject will allow in the 96 page format used for the Osprey Campaign books. The problem is that the topic of Lake Peipus centers around a very confusing era of interlaced politics, religion, sociology, etc.. Unless the reader is already familiar with the scope of 12th century affairs, the book would almost need to be twice its size to properly explain the background to the campaign leading up to the battle. Despite this, David Nicolle attempts to devote a few pages to explaining the events leading up to the battle but does so in such a way as to leave the average reader confused. The author then goes on to address the campaign and actual battle of Lake Peipus with good detail. This book makes a great reference source or addition to the CS collection, but falls a bit short of conveying the big picture of the circumstances leading up to the battle. The wording tends to be a bit scholarly as well. With all of that said, I still enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in 12th century warfare. Osprey has better books in the series and this one gets only 3 stars because the other books have set such a high standard.

Movie is Much Better Than the Book
By Marco Antonio Abarca
Eisenstein's image of charging Tuetonic knights crashing into the ice is so powerful because it beautifully presages the catastrophe Nazi Germany will soon experience. I was initially drawn to this volume because I wanted to learn more about one of the first clashes of German and Russian civilizations.

Unforutnately, there is not a lot known about this battle that took place over 750 years ago. Historical accounts of the battle are limited to a few paragraphs in obscure medeival texts. To my surprise, the Crusader invasion of Russia was a half hearted endeavor and author David Nicolle estimates there were only about a hundred Tuetonic knights participating in the battle. As hard as he may try, there is very little the old Osprey war horse David Nicolle can do to recessitate this old battle.

In the final analysis, I would suggest that the potential reader rent Sergei Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevsky". The movie is not especially accurate and the old sound track is difficult to follow. But the cinematography and story are compelling and Prokofiev's music is memorable.

Lake Peipus, 1242 or 1939?
By Philip Line
This is arguably the poorest of Osprey's Campaign series. The author is clearly not familiar with the subject area, and as a result the book is marred by a considerable number of errors, especially in references to matters peripheral to the battle. For instance, on the map on p.26 the Finnish 'tribes' (Suomi and Hame (Rus. Jem/'Em/Emi), who were, contrary to the book's information, farmers) are in the wrong areas of Finland, 'Murman' become a Finnish tribe when the Russian name meant 'Norwegian', and a mysterious people called the Ugri inhabit the Ural region near the Mansi and Khanty (both of which constituted the Ugrian-speaking group of Finno-Ugrian speakers). There was no such person as 'Earl Karl Birger': presumably this is an error for Birger (Jarl) Magnusson, who possibly led a Swedish crusade to Finland (for which the only evidence is Erik's Chronicle, a rhyme chronicle written 50-70 years after the event). As regards the battle of 1242 itself, the poor sources are interpreted very freely. There is no good evidence that there were horse archers there, or that Mongols were fighting in Russian armies as early as this. The reference to attacks by archers on the Danes (king's men) might equally refer to foot archery, yet the horse archers become the key to victory in this account. The account is in any case confusing and full of baseless speculation, such as the idea that Novgorod chronicle tales of intervention by angels and saints from the heavens may have been a memory of showers of arrows. The number of knights at the battle must have been very small, since the total number of Sword Brothers in 1230 was about 120, 49 had been killed at Saule in 1236, others must have been in garrisons and the Teutonic Knights had not yet exerted their control over Livonia. The epic tale presented here seems to derive as much from Eisenstein's propaganda film as anything else, with Alexander Nevsky the hero. There are, however, a lot of nice pictures in the book, and if it inspires interest in the area it has some value.

A HIGHLY ENJOYABLE READ ABOUT AN AUTHOR WHOSE WORK IS SCORED UPON MY HEART
By The Literacy Advocate
Daniel Keyes changed my life. Specifically, when I read Flowers for Algernon, I understood for the first time in my (then) young life that the written word...a book...had the power to change the world, or at the very least, the way we see or understand it. The lovely journey which Daniel Keyes takes in ALGERNON, CHARLIE, AND I: A WRITER'S JOURNEY, is an informative, charming look at the process this author took as he became the writer who could create Charlie, Algernon, and their story. Originally written as a science fiction story, FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON was later expanded by Keyes into a full-length novel after the story received so much critical acclaim. If you enjoyed the novel and/or the movie CHARLIE (the 1968 version of the film starred Cliff Robertson in his Oscar-winning role as Charlie) of the later version of the book-to-film starring Matthew Modine, you will find this book both illuminating and satisfying. A highly enjoyable read about an author whose work is scored upon my heart.

Secret of "Flowers for Algernon"
By A Customer
The main charm of "Algernon, Charlie and I" is the revealed episodes behind "Flowers for Algernon", which make you understand (at least partly) why "Flowers's for Algernon", the author's acclaimed novel, is so increadibly compelling and moving.
By reading this book, you will find that the "Flowers for Algernon" is not a product of pure fantasy, but is based on so actual facts, emotions and feelings, that the author had been observing and experiencing himself. Charlie's desire to become smart comes from the author's experience while working with mentally retarded children, who wanted to become smart. Charlie's feeling toward the professor, while becoming smarter than the professor who created him, comes from the author's experience of suddently over-growing his parents, immigrants who did not speak English fluently.
After reading this book, you will realise that it is the author's sensitivity, warmness toward other people and his candidness about his own feeling what make his extraordinary novel so warm and moving. In the end, "Flowers for Algernon" is not about this poor guy who has gone through extraordinary experience, but about all of us.

Maximize your retirement and focus on income and master the “inside game” armed with a fresh perspective of  200 years of stock market history tied to the exact lifecycle of the average investor.

The majority of investment books today deal strictly with the external strategies to help you  maximize your retirement.  This book teaches you how to master "the inside game" including how to hire the best advisor for you at this point in your life.  Fact:  Since 2000, Americans saving for retirement have seen their nest-eggs decimated by two catastrophic stock market crashes, and the biggest financial crisis in the U.S. since the Great Depression. With the global economy still in turmoil and the potential for another market crash on the near horizon, today’s generation of retirees and near-retirees can’t afford to rely on outdated, stock market-based savings and investment strategies that put them at high risk for damaging losses. The good news is that they don’t have to.  For 17 years, author David J. Scranton has been teaching investors how to protect their retirement money from stock market turmoil through non-stock alternatives designed to generate reliable retirement income and provide reasonable, strategic portfolio growth.

Thank you son
By Donna Douglas
My adult son suggested I buy Return on Principle as a way to visit my retirement plans with a fresh outlook. It is an enjoyable read, so much so that I didn’t realize the stories and focus on values was providing instructional information. It’s written in a very casual style for a book on money. I’m just starting to make some changes now, but I feel much more confident than I have in 10 years that I won’t lose money and will have what I need when I retire.
