About the Author
Mr. Krapohl polygraph career started in the private sector in 1979, conducting testing for attorneys, police departments and commercial firms in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1985 he was recruited by the US government to perform polygraph testing for intelligence and security purposes, and Mr. Krapohl conducted many significant and highly sensitive cases during that time. Ultimately he became involved in government research on the polygraph, which led to his assignment in 1997 to the US government's polygraph education and research organization at Ft. Jackson, SC. Working among leading scientists in this area afforded Mr. Krapohl new opportunities to investigate the potential, and potential limits, of the polygraph and to explore other technologies that might augment or replace it. His primary focus as a researcher was the development of best practices, and the use of empirically based methodologies. His work led to, among other advances, a polygraph algorithm now used on most computer polygraphs. His expansive terminology reference for polygraphy is the standard in the field. He was a member of the team that validated the Preliminary Credibility Assessment Screening System, a technology now a major component of force protection for the US military. Mr. Krapohl helped craft the charge given the National Research Council during its survey of the literature on the validity of polygraph screening in 2003. Mr. Krapohl made technical presentations on the government's use of credibility assessment technologies to workshops hosted by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation. Following six very productive years in the Research Branch Mr. Krapohl was designated the facility's Deputy Director. He retired from government service in 2015. In his career he has authored more than 100 published research papers, general interest pieces, technical articles and book chapters on credibility assessment and related areas. Outside of his government service, Mr. Krapohl was the Editor-in-Chief for the publications of the American Polygraph Association (APA), 1997-2003 and 2007-2014. He served as APA President in 2006. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for his research and presentations.

Ms. Shaw began her career in polygraph in 2000 while employed with the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, a state government agency established to oversee certified police officers and provide pre-employment testing services for over 400 law enforcement entities. During her 14 years with the Council she served as an examiner, supervisor and polygraph school director for the state. She additionally established her own polygraph company, Shaw Polygraph Services, Inc., in 2006 where she administered specific issue and post-conviction sex offender tests and engaged in various educational and consulting endeavors to include quality control services and curriculum development. Ms. Shaw has provided numerous lectures to a variety of state, national and international polygraph associations, as well as American Polygraph Association (APA) accredited schools. She has also served as a consultant to diverse local and government agencies in the U.S., South America and Asia-Pacific regions. In addition to managing her private polygraph company she is also currently the owner and co-director of the
National Polygraph Academy based out of Lexington, KY. The school is accredited by the APA and recognized by the American Association of Police Polygraphists. The school provides professional training to law enforcement, government and private sector students in various locations in the U.S. and abroad. From early on in her career, Ms. Shaw has been a strong advocate of education and professional practices in the field of polygraphy. She is the recipient of awards for her presentations and participation in committees responsible for publishing model policies for post-conviction sex offender testing, law enforcement/public service screening as well as the APA's 2011 Meta-Analytic Survey of Criterion Accuracy of Polygraph Techniques. Ms. Shaw served as President of the American Polygraph Association in 2012 and held other board positions for 6 years. She has also served as president and vice-president of the Kentucky Polygraph Association and is a member of additional professional polygraph associations including the American Association for Police Polygraphists and the American Society for Testing and Materials International.

My take on Fundamentals of Polygraph Practice

I have been a Polygraph Examiner for nearly forty 40 years. Since 2001,I have been inspecting Polygraph programs (schools) around the world for their accreditation in the APA (American Polygraph Association).
I believe that this book contains all you need to know and more about this profession and should be required reading in all Polygraph programs.
It is a great book written by two former APA Presidents, top notch individuals, Polygraph Examiners , lecturers and researchers.
I highly recommend this book.

The best book

Absolutely fantastic book. I like it so much. The main reasons are:
- the book is encyclopedia of lie detection. It contains almost all issues,
- I`m fond of history of PDD (psychophysiological detection of deception), this part provides not only facts, but the spirit of lie detection,
- and I'm absolutely impacted by scientific part of the book. It gives not only terms and calculations but highly useful tables which aid validate most PDD methods.
I'm still in reading and quite sure that other parts of the book are perfect. This price for the book is really coincide for a such good book. So I'm a happy customer... The issue is probably in my country possible buy this book quite cheaper by Google Play. Not sure that Google Play is a fair seller, for example they sell The Polygraph and Lie Detection as e-book!!! It is free for downloading from NAP.
Sorry for off top. I like this book and highly recommend it.

And "The police located one suspect who had been seen in the area earlier that day, 31-year-old parolee named Doug Williams. Williams denied any knowledge or involvement in the crime, and has agreed to take a polygraph examination" (location 4486) makes my day :-D

The book material is an excellent resource and well written

The book material is an excellent resource and well written. A comprehensive book taking note of the current state of Polygraphy was long over due. I would have given it 5 stars except for a frustrating problem: I ordered the first book and as I was reading it, several pages came loose from the binding. So, I returned it to Amazon who promptly sent me another one. But, after a few hours or reading, pages started falling out of the replacement book. The company who is manufacturing this book is doing so with a defective binding process.

Haunted by the specter the United States released in detonating atomic bombs in New Mexico, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Tuwaletstiwa turned to sand and fire, as artist in residence at Pilchuck Glass School in 2000, to explore this primal creative/destructive act. In a second residency the following year, she explored the Holocaust using blown glass.
In 2012, Bullseye Glass Company gave Tuwaletstiwa a residency. Over 18 months, she worked with kiln-fired glass. It has become her central medium. The artist writes: “The raw material that becomes glass holds an interaction of wind, water, fire and earth, the organic creative process lived over geologic time. This transformative process continues to live in my studio through how I work with glass.”
A follow-up book to the sold-out Mapping Water (Radius Books, 2007), Judy Tuwaletstiwa: Glass weaves a story of her discoveries and explorations while working with glass over the past 4 years based on her work over the past 45 years in fiber, paint and writing. Her use of glass on canvas and paper is at once refined and surprising―a truly revolutionary response to a well-known medium. The highly personal combination of text and images in this book bridges fine art and craft, technology and nature, the political and the aesthetic, the conceptual and the material.

Enjoyed by Kindergarteners

I am a teacher at a childcare center. I read this aloud to a group of Kindergarteners. They really enjoyed the story and wanted to know more about further adventures of the characters. At first they were a bit nervous that the story would be scary, but as the verse unfolded they began to see who our hero was. They enjoyed talking about the story and thinking up what might happen next. I also had them draw pictures of how they each saw their favorite character. It was a great way to get them to interact with a story and get them thinking about writing a story themselves.

A Great Book!

My two children ages 8 and 6 really loved this book. My 8 year old really loved the play on words with the name of the book and the main character's name. The concept of the book is great. All kids can relate to things that go "bump in the night" and what can be better than a hero that fights them off! It is a very cute book and is very cleverly written.

About the Author
Oppi Untracht's interest in crafts began in the 1930s and developed with Fine Arts degrees from New York University and Columbia. He has written numerous articles for Graphis, Craft Horizons, American Craft and Colliers Encyclopedia, and is the author of Metal Techniques for Craftsmen, also published by Robert Hale.

I had been told by many people how great it was, but not until I had a copy in my own hand did I realize how much is covered, how easy it is to follow the techniques, and how grateful I am to have it. I bought my copy as new from a used book seller (A1) and received it in a timely fashion and in perfect condition.

Overview versus Technical Know How

This is a good book for those wanting a broad overview of all aspects of jewellery making with metals. It contains good illustrations of finished pieces; however, it is not a book that gives step by step instructions. So, if you are looking for a 'how to' book, look elsewhere. Otherwise it is a useful reference but not essential.

About the Author

KIT PANCOAST NAGAMURA, a Tokyo resident since 1991, has a Ph.D. in literature and has won various teaching and writing awards. She works as a freelance writer and editor, and as an acquisitions editor at Kodansha Ltd. She has authored or coauthored three English-language phrase books for Japanese learners of English. She regularly writes for the Japan Times and other media outlets.

KYOKO TSUCHIYA was born in Nagoya, Japan, and graduated from the Tokyo University Faculty of Liberal Arts, where she majored in American studies. She is a professional translator. Among the works she has rendered into Japanese are Emotional Intelligence (Daniel Goleman), Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Rebecca Wells), and The Yearling (Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings).

Beside on problem, it is a good book for those who can read Hiragana.

I am a Japanese mother who has America born half Japanese children. I went to library and borrowed a lot of Japanese study related books and CD. And this one was good comparing other book if you have a basic Japanese knowledge and able to read Hiragana. Surprizingly many of other Japanese study book had not Furigana on the top of Kanji, and this book has Furigana on the top of Kanji. So, while you are able to study Kanji, you have no trouble to pronounce it. However, some body else mentioned, this book has section which calls "Private Zone", it is not definitely appropriate for my kids who is using this book ( she is 13). I removed that section and copy MP player CD eliminating that section to her smartphone. Anyway, it is very generous that they have this CD attached to this book, they have common phrases. The publisher, Kodansha. is the one of biggest publisher in Japan. They are not specialized in learning Japanese book, but fiction, non-fiction and magazine. This is done by very reputable Japanese publisher. They most likely spend good amount of money on writing this book.

This is all you need to get started on your path to getting along in Japan. Each phrase is chosen by the authors with deep sensitivity to language that will not only get your needs met, but also present you as a polite human being to your listeners in a country where that is very important.

It is filled with information that allows you to reach towards more than superficial relationships. You will have ways to express yourself effectively on an emotional and even sexually intimate level. Goes where no other guide has gone before in this area. The presentation is humorous and well organized making it fun, readable, and easy to find what you need quickly when you are on the spot and need help!

wide-ranging and very inclusive.

I'm using this book as an aid in some mutual-tutoring sessions with a Japanese girl who is trying to get into a local university. She tutors me in Japanese, I tutor her in English. For me, the book has been particularly useful as a source of everyday language which--as any student of the language knows--is confoundingly different from the acceptably formal/polite level taught in textbooks. I pick a particularly confusing phrase, my study partner then dissects the phrase and explains what all those "na"s and "no"s and "de"s really are. Oddly enough, it has also been helpful to her, as I read off a phrase and she tries to render it into decent English. Obviously our needs are very specialized, but there are some highly useful phrases in here, for the traveller and for the expatriate trying to set up household in Japan.

About the Author
Kylie Minogue is 34-years-old, and has been famous for fifteen years - since starring in 'Neighbours' as Charlene. As a result she is signed by the Australian label Mushroom, and then with Stock, Aitken and Waterman in London. Great insight into Kylie's World

This book is great; lots of photos and behind-the-scenes views of Kylie's life and especially her tours. While it is nice to hear her address her feelings on topics such as the "Impossible Princess" album and her SAW years, it is not the tell-all autobiography many had hoped it would be. Kylie does offer insights here and there, but she states early in the book that she's not ready to write an autobiography yet. For example, she barely mentions her relationship with Michael Hutchence.
My only real gripes with this book are that sometimes the text is really difficult to read with the color combinations that were chosen, and that William Baker, who wrote much of the book, injects too much of his own autobiographical information. I know that for part of it, he is trying to establish his credentials as a fashion consultant or whatever he is, but it comes off as incredibly self-absorbed a lot of the time. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that Kylie, as the star of the book, allowed that to happen. I would have given it only 4 1/2 stars if that were possible, but I rounded it up to 5 to be fair.
These are minor complaints however...it really is a great book. I had to go watch my Kylie Tour DVDs again after reading the it, taking into account all the tidbits I had learned about what went on. Plus, the photograph collection really is amazing. Looking through the pictures that chronicle her evolution over the years, it is really easy to see why some call her "The Australian Madonna" here in the States. No Kylie fan should pass this book up!

I found this book to be really interesting except for the fact that every now and then the co-writer 'Willian Baker' would talk more about himself than kylie, more about his super hero 'Boy George' than Kylie and reveal anecdotes of his adolescence that really aren't to the point. If we wanted to read a review on William Baker or Boy George, we would have bought their own autobiographies but we bought one called 'KYLIE : La la la' and expect it to be about her. I thought the parts she wrote were most interesting and I loved the pictures. This book is done tastefully and isn't the smut that some have blasted it to be. I live in Australia and the cover of my copy is different but the content is all the same. It's a fantastic testament to her career and really shows in visual form the history that has been her performing life so far. A great companion to any album or concert release, I found it most interesting and I good read.

About the Author
David S. Moore is Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor of Statistics, Emeritus, at Purdue University, USA, and was 1998 president of the American Statistical Association. He is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. He has served as program director for statistics and probability at the National Science Foundation. He has also served as president of the International Association for Statistical Education and has received the Mathematical Association of America's national award for distinguished college or university teaching of mathematics. George P. McCabe is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Statistics at Purdue University, USA. His entire professional career has been spent at Purdue, with sabbaticals at Princeton, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Melbourne, Australia, the University of Berne, Switzerland, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado, USA, and the National University of Ireland in Galway. He is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and was 1998 chair of its section on Statistical Consulting. He has served on the editorial boards of several statistics journals. He has consulted with many major corporations and has testified as an expert witness on the use of statistics in several legal cases. Bruce A. Craig is Professor of Statistics and Director of the Statistical Consulting Service at Purdue University, USA (following George McCabe). He received his B.S. in mathematics and economics from Washington University in St. Louis and his PhD in statistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Craig's research interests focus on the development of novel statistical methodology to address research questions in the life sciences. These strong academic research credentials combine with his many years of teaching statistics at all level to provide the academic experience and contemporary real data that lecturers have grown to expect in this textbook.

Greedy Authors Change Problems to Warrant New Editions

The people that made this book are the worst. They have had 5 editions in the past 10 years. Why? To make money. That way they can constantly charge a higher price without changing the material. Statistics has not changed enough in the past 10 years to warrant 5 new additions.

What these authors are doing is taking all of their sample questions and changing them. They change the numbers in the problems, change the question numbers, but all the material in the book stays the same. Good luck just buying an older edition. If your professor is like mine, the problem sets correlate to the question numbers in the book. And that makes doing them without the latest edition a big issue.

The only thing I can see that is different book to book is things about computer statistics programs. Still, much of this has to do with greedy authors.

This book needs a glossary and a comprehensive index. Overall, this book is poorly organized and provides a confusing and hard to follow introduction to the basics of statistics. By the eighth edition, I would think they'd have resolved basic problems like this.
