Nice to finally come across a decorating book devoted to a monochromatic scheme, in this case, popular grey. Well written, appealing interiors, plenty of photos. Mentions specific paint brands and colors. I love that it addresses the importance of factoring in a room's directional exposure--a color that looks good in a south-facing room may look dismal in a room with a northern exposure. Well done.

Judge Dee will keep you guessing
By Tracy L. Benton
One of the most interesting things about Van Gulik's Judge Dee books is that the Judge is usually juggling three or four mysteries at once. Your brain definitely stays awake as he shifts his attention from one to the other. "The Red Pavilion" takes place on "Paradise Island", a town in which the main industry is the selling of pleasure--sort of a Las Vegas of ancient China. Between current murders and murders of the past, the Judge has his hands full, and with only one of his usual four assistants he is a busy guy.
I enjoyed the interesting characters of the various courtesans, bouncers, businessmen, and mysterious beggars no end. His Excellency is not beyond making a guess at a solution and then proving himself wrong, which is quite refreshing in detective novels. If you like detective novels combined with ancient culture, you may well enjoy these books.

Who Killed The Courtesan?
By Miz Ellen
When Judge Dee meets Autumn Moon she is wearing a translucent robe. She strolls onto the veranda of the secluded suite of rooms where Dee is staying for night and flirts atrociously with him. Dee remains polite. He has been forced to break his journey at the resort of Paradise Island but he has every intention of going on in the morning.

Then he learns that the suite of rooms, the Red Pavilion, has been the scene of murder in the past. And lately, Lee Lien, a distinguished scholar of a distinguished family, apparently committed suicide there. When Judge Dee returns from a dinner with the local notables, he discovers the body of Autumn Moon on the floor of the locked bedchamber!

Judge Dee was a real magistrate and official of the Tang dynasty. In his fictional series about this great man, Robert Van Gulik searches out notable exploits and tales of the Chinese Imperial system and presents them to modern readers in a form that entertains as well as enlightens. Most of Gulik's Judge Dee stories take place with the magistrate in his district. This one shows Judge Dee on the road, acting as an assessor for a fellow magistrate. The setting is unique in all the Judge Dee books: a pleasure resort where the usual mores and laws are somewhat suspended. The denouement of this fascinating novel brings to mind the adage: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

clever and occasionally humorous mystery
By Miss Ivonne
Judge Dee, magistrate of Poo-yang, eagerly heads home after an unpleasant hearing in the capital surrounding some chicanery and illicit sex at a Buddhist monastery in the earlier The Chinese Bell Murders: A Judge Dee Detective Story. Dee finds himself unexpectedly thrust into the role of investigator into an alleged suicide in the pleasure district of Paradise Island in the neighboring district. The contrast between the "anything-goes" attitude of the denizens of Paradise Island and the moralizing, strait-laced Judge Dee sets up quite a few amusing scenes.

Judge Lo Kwan-Choong, the magistrate of the neighboring district of Chin-hwa, returns to add comic spice to The Red Pavilion. He also provides the reason for Dee's need to investigate in the first place. The womanizing sybarite Magistrate Lo first appeared in The Chinese Bell Murders, the second Judge Dee novel released in the United States (although not the second chronologically). As befits the irresponsible and careless Lo, he dashes off from Pleasure Island to the city of Chin-hwa to avoid some unpleasantness, and Lo asks Judge Dee to finish off the investigation into the suicide of a brilliant young scholar named Lee Lien, who had just been appointed a member of the Imperial Academy and had everything to live for. Author Robert van Gulik crafts The Red Pavilion as a locked-door mystery, which, at first, throws Judge Dee off the scent. It's only after yet another murder that Dee realizes that Lee's death was no suicide.

Although resentful at Lo's fecklessness, the long-suffering, meticulous Dee ignores Lo's suggestion that he just sign off on the suicide and looks into that matter. During the several days that Judge Dee and his trusty lieutenant Ma Joong investigate, they not only learn the truth about Lee's death but also resolve the murder of the beautiful but cruel courtesan Autumn Moon and yet another murder committed 30 years earlier. In those two cases, the victims, like Lee, died behind locked doors inside the self-same Red Pavilion. Readers won't guess the murderer until the penultimate chapter.

The Red Pavilion also shows a sweet side to the normally devil-may-care Ma Joong. To say anything more would spoil the novel.

For those new to the series, author Robert van Gulik, a Dutch diplomat, linguist and Asian scholar, relied on a real-life Chinese magistrate during the T'ang Dynasty named Ti Jen-chieh for his Judge Dee novels. Simplifying the magistrate's name to Judge Dee Jen-djieh, van Gulik first introduced the West to Judge Dee in Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee (Dee Goong An) (Detective Stories), first published in 1949 (although not translated into English until 1976).

Visions of Infinity: The Great Mathematical Problems, by Ian Stewart

It is one of the wonders of mathematics that, for every problem mathematicians solve, another awaits to perplex and galvanize them. Some of these problems are new, while others have puzzled and bewitched thinkers across the ages. Such challenges offer a tantalizing glimpse of the field’s unlimited potential, and keep mathematicians looking toward the horizons of intellectual possibility.

In Visions of Infinity, celebrated mathematician Ian Stewart provides a fascinating overview of the most formidable problems mathematicians have vanquished, and those that vex them still. He explains why these problems exist, what drives mathematicians to solve them, and why their efforts matter in the context of science as a whole. The three-century effort to prove Fermat’s last theorem—first posited in 1630, and finally solved by Andrew Wiles in 1995—led to the creation of algebraic number theory and complex analysis. The Poincaré conjecture, which was cracked in 2002 by the eccentric genius Grigori Perelman, has become fundamental to mathematicians’ understanding of three-dimensional shapes. But while mathematicians have made enormous advances in recent years, some problems continue to baffle us. Indeed, the Riemann hypothesis, which Stewart refers to as the “Holy Grail of pure mathematics,” and the P/NP problem, which straddles mathematics and computer science, could easily remain unproved for another hundred years.

An approachable and illuminating history of mathematics as told through fourteen of its greatest problems, Visions of Infinity reveals how mathematicians the world over are rising to the challenges set by their predecessors—and how the enigmas of the past inevitably surrender to the powerful techniques of the present.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Few of us share Stewart’s mathematical skills. But we relish the intellectual stimulation of joining him in exploring mathematical problems that have pushed even genius to the limit. We thrill, for instance, to the ingenuity of a great Chinese mathematician coming tantalizingly close to proving the centuries-old Goldbach Conjecture. And we feel the human meaning of mathematical achievement when a triumphant British analyst weeps before television cameras after finally proving a seventeenth-century algebraic theorem. We feel that meaning again when a brilliant Russian mathematician retreats into reclusive isolation, distressed because of initial skepticism toward his groundbreaking work on a nineteenth-century riddle. But high-level mathematics stirs deep emotions largely because it taps into the mind’s deepest impulses. Stewart repeatedly shows how a trivial mathematical curiosity can open up vital new conceptual insights. Readers learn, for example, that the apparently inconsequential four-color problem has led investigators deep into theoretical physics and has compelled fundamental rethinking of what constitutes a mathematical proof in a computerized age. Proofs incorporating computer-generated calculations may strike old-school mathematicians as unsatisfying, but Stewart assures readers that mathematics still depends on human investigators and that such investigators will not soon run out of daunting mathematical problems. A bracing mental workout for amateur mathematicians. --Bryce Christensen

very interesting topics, but not explained very well
By Humble
I am well trained in math. I love math and tried reading two of Mr. Stewart's books: In Pursuit of the Unknown: 17 Equations That Changed the World; and Visions of Infinity. I expected the books to be amazingly interesting but was disappointed and frustrated when reading them. Mr. Stewart jumps over key steps, which are difficult to grasp and reaches for the end result!

I think less than 10% of the people with advanced degrees in the sciences could follow his explanations in any chapter and actually feel they understood the topic.

I am surprised that the book's cover jacket has endorsements from newspapers saying the book is easy and fun. My humble advice to prospective readers: borrow the book from a library and make your own judgement and then write your own review on Amazon.

Fun, Entertaining and Enlightening, GREAT READ!
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
I've pre-read the soon to be released "golden ticket" book --ala Willy Wonka's candy bars-- The Golden Ticket: P, NP, and the Search for the Impossible-- which explores P-NP, and along with Ian's Infinity book here, these are really the only two UP TO DATE books on the millenium and other "tough" problems in math and computing, both solved and awaiting new approaches. Although P-NP is technically a computational complexity problem, knowing which problems can and can't be solved in polynomial vs. exponential time is widely believed to hold the key to "all" the other problems in computing AND math! An astonishing prospect.

Infinity is a GREAT, fun read, with just enough math to please, but not intimidate an advanced high school level reader. It is not just another of the numerous "here are the heroes --heroines-- of math" books that dwell on older, solved problems. The history and problems given lead us into both unsolved CURRENT problems, and the birth of many of the newer --over 450 at present writing-- subspecialties of analysis, math, tricky current theorems, etc. As usual, Stewart doesn't "talk down" to his readers, and you get a real "brain workout" feeling after reading this wonderful survey of the "top 14" toughest solved and unsolved, and their real-life ramifications as solved and when solved.

One of the really amazing side shows in this exciting field is the nature of humans vs. computers that is quietly raging in math. P-NP --although mostly thought to be unequal--, for example, even peeks into quantum observer and quantum computing issues about how "great" even average human brains might potentially be. It pulls back a curtain in which a variety of "modern" brute force, algorithmic, sieve and spectral methods and other algorithmic approaches to problems are finding unexpected barriers.

This is non trivial, because a modern operating system like Windows with hundreds of thousands of lines of code is "controlled" by tiny algorithms of two or three lines, as are million line fly by wire jets. Our planet is rapidly becoming algorithm driven, to the extent that most new math methods and problems are described in algorithmic terms. But P-NP is only a little slice of this wonderful book, which covers a vast number of newer and less known stumbling blocks within the top 14, including the better known millenial problems. In Systems Engineering, we know that infinite and tiny problems are much easier than the "middle" complexity problems.

Just as dynamic systems can "settle down" into chaos/fractals, strange attractors or an oscillation, the book, after taking us on a fascinating journey through the known and unknown, gives us a great, up to date feel for which problems are in which category of difficulty and likely vs. unlikely to be solved in our times. The "toughest" problems are the stuff of cryptanalysis and are "good" from the standpoint of providing security, but Ian also shows the many possible openings at the back of the tent in addition to the door, by suggesting possible "close enough" solutions and directions that are worth pursuing.

Great survey, with just enough depth in each area to tease the reader into looking further. Because of Ian's usual "analogy" explanations and diagrams, very tough problems are explained intuitively, but the actual math is sneakily grad level. You WILL hunger for more if any of these tantalizing puzzles hit home. If you're a P-NP enthusiast, you should know that Ian doesn't think it is solvable in anyone reading this books lifetimes! But don't get discouraged, he could be wrong, but does make a strong and thoughtful case.

In the golden ticket book above, Fortnow also says P/NP won't be solved in --possibly-- thousands of years, due to the kind of "proving a negative" of "showing" that EVERY potential algorithm HAS to fail. The cool thing mentioned by both Ian and Fortnow is that these REALLY tough problems tend to bring vast areas of science together that were silos in the past. If you look up Systems Science on Wiki, you'll get an idea of the missing link in a lot of these discussions. The unstated speculation is whether the human brain "perceives" higher dimensions than algorithms can reach in some fashion, and P/NP has areas as strange as the quantum observer for the possibly unexpectedly great potential of humans, as yet unknown.

Library Picks always buys the books we review, and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors or publishers, and our comments are solely for the benefit of Amazon shoppers.

Good and well readable overview of Millennium & other math problems
By Martijn13Maart1970
As stated in the item info, " In Visions of Infinity, celebrated mathematician Ian Stewart provides a fascinating overview of the most formidable problems mathematicians have vanquished, and those that vex them still. He explains why these problems exist, what drives mathematicians to solve them, and why their efforts matter in the context of science as a whole."
After reading this book I have to say this is indeed what the book delivers, as much as I can at least imagine to be possible. So this makes for a very interesting read, also for the layman. However, some problems are so abstract, they defy a simple analogue for daily use. That is why some reviewers have commented that the book was not always clear to readers who, like me, are not having e.g. a PhD in maths. they are partially right, since there can not be a book that lists all these problems that is easily read as well. There has to be a compromise, and some feel that is why this book, as so many others, is hybrid and awkward. That is ironic, since the author tried (too?) hard to give it a try to explain all of the theorems that the current math community considers important. That does indeed lead sometimes to passages I had to skip, and I have a MSc degree in Aeronautical engineering!
The alternative would have been to omit the too abstract ones for readability, but then the title of the book would not have lived up to the promise and should have been changed in 'Visions of Infinity For Dummies'. Or, even worse, what if the author would have left out all math details and turned it into a sort of popularized Da Vinci code?
You cannot eat the cake and have it (or is it the other way around?): if you pick up a book about math, you will have to do some math reading! Unfortunately, many of the most important problems in math are not only difficult to solve (hence the million dollar prize) but, unlike for instance Fermat's Last Theorem, many problems are also difficult to state, even for people who are no layman. Math is simply so big, that many specialists do not have the faintest idea what others are doing, let alone the layman reader. Having said that, it is clear why it is difficult to write a book like this, trying also to explain the importance of these math problems to the layman. The author tries the most he can and does an excellent job in making the compromise between completeness and readability. Many fascinating subjects appear and I just suggest you skip the parts you cannot follow, since there is plenty of other interesting stuff left! For instance, the P/NP problem is explained very well, and I also liked the author's comment on Perelman's reclusive behaviour during and after his Millennium Prize.
The only thing that would have helped would have been a conclusion in the end of every subject, so it would have still been possible to grasp the main ideas without reading all the formulas in those chapters that were too difficult for some of us, but then again, maybe some math defies simple explanation with metaphors in daily life. Still, give it a try and you will be in for a good read.

Stuffed elephant, two children, and roaring giants in this exciting YA novel by Ted Kelsey
By Cris Ruffolo
Ted Kelsey wrote Olga, a delightful YA novel that felt like Alice falling deep in rabbit hole and ending up in Wonderland - except that in Olga, it was not just one but two persons, Sally and Jack, who were flown to the clouds, and eventually reached Cloud Castle, by a stuffed elephant - and Neil Gaiman's Coraline, when she discovered another world different from the one she was living in.

Olga - ted kelsey - book review - readingruffolos

The comparison ends in those areas though as Kelsey wrote the story with a voice distinctly his, devoid of the attempt to sound like Rowling or Gaiman or the Grimm Brothers. Kelsey wrote in short, simple sentences but carefully selected words, uncomplicated and yet exciting enough to keep you reading until the very last page. The story's pacing is unhurried evident by the chapter division, which is neither long nor short for readers falling between the ages of seven and 12.

The story gains momentum when our child protagonists, Jack and Sally, discovered something suspicious in the old, abandoned house. What they thought as one evening of discovering ghosts in the dark turned out to be an adventure on the clouds and meeting a character named Olga along with her father Ragash and a cook named Freakything.

In this novel, Kelsey marries two realms, reality and fantasy, and places two children, Jack and Sally, this story's protagonists, in the middle of the action that involved clouds, giants, moths, and a tiger. Kelsey did not paint a rosy picture of the human world as seen from the eyes of the children in this story. He wrote a realistic world, one that a reader can relate to when she reads about curfew, school, and being grounded. The underlying messages of humankind's indifference to nature and arrogance in dealing with issues are subtly painted in the conversations of several characters, who have witnessed everything that humankind have done over the centuries.

Kelsey sneaked in an airplane in the story and a character under the name Mr. Dodadudis whose appearance did not directly change the course of the story. The airplane is not irrelevant though and you'll know why in Chapter 24. Kelsey hinted another book with Mr. Dodadudis playing central character. Wise, nice insertion adding spice to the Kelsey writing and series of stories.

Kelsey teamed up with artist Dillon Samuelson in providing black and white illustrations to the story. This reminded me of Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddel's collaboration in three of Gaiman's novels, Coraline, Fortunately, the Milk..., and The Graveyard Book. These three books are sold in one collection on Amazon.

Samuelson's illustrations in Kelsey's novel is only a handful though. I wish there was more. Yes, this reviewer (a 29-year-old mother of three graduate student slash journalist slash social develoment worker) would love more pictures.

Olga is also a perfect weekend read for adults looking for reading materials that won't cause them cerebral hemorrhage. This one is fun and lighthearted and yet, it did not forget to emphasize the crucial role that humans play in this world. What that role is up for you to find out. Clue: it's pretty obvious.

Olga is a 5 Star/Top Pick for 2015 by the Underground Book Reviews and recently received Official Selection Honors in the Young Adult category of the 2015 New Apple Summer eBook Awards for Excellence in Independent Publishing.

Kelsey is slowly building his name as a celebrated author of children's literature who makes winter reading warm and fuzzy. His next book, Shasha and Wally Watson Vs The Faker, is coming out soon. If you like to open your mind - and well, your heart - to a new author who writes in a voice that delivers a social message in a non-preachy way and then coat that message in a chocolate and caramel mixture of excitement, fun, and magic, get to know Ted Kelsey and his works. You can thank the clouds for this fellow.

Promise, you won't be disappointed.

Captured My Attention
By Sarah Freeman
Olga is a refreshing read for it's unexpected plot and characters. The premise is quite unique that I was intrigued, wondering what was happening in this untold world of giants. The actions thrilled, moving quickly, and the characters developed well. Each chapter dangles a carrot in front of you, enticing you to continue reading. I finished this book in three days.

Ted Kelsey does an excellent job unraveling the symbolism of the novel with integrity, not losing the tone and flow of the novel, and without becoming didactic. The message of courage and inner strength resonates well as the young protagonists, Jack and Sally, discover their real selves in the midst of grotesque fear and evil. Recommend not just for adolescents but adults as well.

If you enjoy reading fantasy novels that are easy to read, fast-paced, and creatively articulate, this novel is for you.

NOTE: I received a free copy of this book via Story Cartel in exchange for providing an unbiased review.

By Gary Ciesla
Olga, a children’s novel by Ted Kelsey is an inventive and enjoyable story about two young people, Sally and Jack, who get caught up – literally – in a bit of mischief that takes them on an adventure in the clouds. Once there they encounter Olga, the unhappy daughter of an evil cloud giant who has been plotting with his brothers to go to earth and destroy it. Jack has to learn to be brave, and both he and Sally struggle to avoid the many dangers they face in the cloud kingdom, as they figure out a way to escape from the clouds and return to their families back on earth. The illustrations in the book by artist Dillon Samuelson are extremely well done, and they help bring this entertaining story to life. Samuelson is a terrific artist! Olga is an ideal selection for parents who love to read to their children at bedtime.

Description from the book back cover:

Opposites attract! The only thing Richard Donvale and Challis Fox could agree on was that they were just too different ever to be compatible. A 32-year-old, rich, sophisticated diamond mine owner, Richard considered himself to be the complete opposite of the wild, unconventional 22-year-old radio host. So why was he so strongly attracted to her? Determined not to succumb to pleasure, Richard tried to stay away from Challis, but soon the temptation to indulge in a reckless seduction was too irresistible to deny ...

From Publishers Weekly
In this exciting, well-written fantasy, the setting (Britain in the Dark Ages) is as much a character as Wise Child and her guardian Juniper. Orphaned by the death of her grandmother and her sailor-father's disappearance, Wise Child chooses to become the ward of Juniper, the village wisewoman who is healer, midwife and witch. Under Juniper's kind but stern tutelage, Wise Child thrives, learning herb lore, reading and basic survival in those difficult times. Wise Child manages to live between the Churchrepresented by the grim village priestand the witchcraft that Juniper would have her learn. This delicate balance is destroyed by the coming of Maeve, Wise Child's mother, who had abandoned her. Her evil awakens the real power of Wise Child as well as the superstitions of the village, rendering the trial of Juniper for witchcraft inevitable. Self-realization enables Wise Child to save both herself and Juniper in an exciting climax. Though the ending may strike some as too easy, this is an intriguing portrayal of an ancient way of life, and Wise Child is an engaging heroine. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8 Wise Child's life takes a new direction when her grandmother dies; her parents are both gone and in all the poverty-stricken village there is no one willing to take her inexcept Juniper, a mysterious healer from Cornwall who lives alone and has decidedly heterodox ideas about the place and purpose of women. Wise Child is self-centered and headstrong, but under Juniper's cheerful tutelage she begins to see herself as part of a world large enough for a liberated view and for magic too; Juniper's an expert witch, a hybrid combination of natural scientist and traditional broom-rider. Wise Child is quickly initiated into the secret arts. Juniper is both too modern and too perfect for the story. She has little difficulty coping with a Good Witch's usual enemies (an evil sorceress and a mob of fearful peasants egged on by the local priest), always arrives in the nick of time to rescue Wise Child, and shows never a trace of fear, impatience, or superstition. When, her many good deeds forgotten, she is about to be burned at the stake, she escapes with Wise Child, and the two find their way to the Isles of the Blessed. Readers may be intrigued both by the characters and by this revisionist view of witchcraft, although they will find a more realistic and involving exploration of it in Margaret Mahy's The Changeover (Macmillan, 1984). “Many years after I first encountered Wise Child, I wrote Catherine, Called Birdy and The Midwife’s Apprentice. I didn’t realize until I reread Wise Child recently what a debt I owe to its author.”—Karen Cushman, from her foreward to Colman

A wonderful, realistic, magical coming of age story of readers of all ages. Highly recommended
By Juushika
One of my favorite books from my childhood and still a joy to reread, Wise Child is the story of one magical child's coming of age. Spoiled but abandoned at a young age, Wise Child is taken in my a woman named Juniper. Juniper lives apart from the small, poor Christian village that Wise Child comes from, and she is a fair but tough mentor, making Wise Child work hard and learn much. In her house on a hill, Juniper teaches Wise Child languages, math, and astronomy, how to grow, harvest, and use herbs, and how to heal the sick in the village below. Slowly, Juniper begins to initiate Wise Child into the way of a doran, a class of magical women who live in the rhythm of nature and use their magic to help those around them. Wise Child's powers blossom, but dark shadows hang over her peaceful life with Juniper: her beautiful, powerful, dangerous mother calls to her from afar, and the close-minded town threatens their safety up on the hill. The book is a magical story of the hard work of coming of age and the love and power than can result from it. Wise Child must find confidence in herself, faith in her future and her powers, and love for her others in order to grow, creating a life-affirming, strong, true message. Furlong's writing style is smooth, her characters are easy to identity with and to love, and the magic in her story is both realistic and exciting. I highly recommend this book to readers of all age groups, and I love coming back to it myself.

The best thing that a coming of age story can do is show us not only the trails and tribulations of adolescence but also the good things about it and the wonders that we reap from it. This book does exactly that. In Juniper's house, Wise Child works hard, learns to do things she doesn't necessarily want to do, and is tested, but her abilities and successes are also celebrated. Juniper is perhaps the idea parent-figure: she coaches, supports, loves, but also forces Wise Child to be strong and stand on her own two feet. As such, Wise Child's story is easy to identify with but also uplifting and promising--the reader comes away knowing that they are not alone in their difficulties, but also that there is something to be gained from it all. The balance between sacrifice and gain is perfect, making this a wonderful read for adolescents and the still-maturing of all age.

Not only is the basis of the story a strong one, the actual aspects of it, including characterization, writing style, and details such as the role of magic are all incredibly well done. Juniper is a mysterious, open-hearted, independent woman, a real role model and inspiring character. Wise Child is realistically selfish and doubtful, but also shows realistic growth and strength that the reader can imitate. Wise Child's POV is in character without being limited, aggravating, or immature, and the overall writing style is smooth, clean, and incredibly fluid and easy to read. The role of magic in the story is well thought out: Furlong makes it quite clear, through Juniper, that there are different realms of what it means to be "real," and her conception of magic manages to make sense in the visible world while still containing enough fantasy and originality to sweep the reader away. Truly this is a skillful book, perhaps the most skillful that Furlong as written. In holds up well when reread and works well for any audience.

I highly recommend Wise Child. To the adolescent, it is a story they can identify with and be inspired by; to those chronically out of adolescence, it is a way to look back and reassess our own journeys, and also a reminder than learning, maturity, and increasing strength is a never ending, never easy, entirely worthwhile journey. The book is a quick read, engrossing, and enjoyable. I'm happy to own it and return to reread it every year or two.

The path to wisdom comes at a price
By E. R. Bird
To begin, I direct you to the original cover. Let's take a gander at the beauty of this cover, ladies and gentlemen. First of all, it's beyond beautiful. It's stunning. Two women, one grown and one small, gaze coolly at the viewer. They are surrounded by the elements of their trade, namely herbs with a pistle & morter. I salute the cover artist in this case. Both characters are unaccountably and undeniably right.

Wise Child lives in an early Scottish community. Her mother left her long ago and her father is a shipman, ever away at sea. When her grandmother dies of old age, Wise Child is nine years old and utterly alone in the world. Taken in by the local witch, Wise Child is initially reluctant to live with someone potentially evil. In time, however, she comes to love her guardian, Juniper, and the two become close. Even as Wise Child's mother, an evil sorceress, lays claim on her child and the villagers grow restless at having a witch in such close proximity the two stick together. This is a story about finding the person who loves you and bearing with them through thick and thin. It's about love.

Furlong's an elegant writer, and this was an amazingly well wrought tale. Juniper is almost without fault, though she is by no means unlikable because of her perfection. Certainly I felt the woman's hands off approach towards raising a willful child was a little bizarre. Juniper is almost never angry with the initially spoiled Wise Child, and one has to wonder what a less well-behaved tyke would have done in her place. Wise Child herself is entirely human and full of the kind of flaws that make her real and interesting. She's rarely in complete control of any situation, but she knows her own mind. The book itself is very appropriate for younger viewers. There's relatively little violence and zippo inappropriate language. Even Wise Child's flighty parents were married when she was born. You probably would have a hard time finding a book more appropriate for those kids that want a fantasy but are also attached to stories with a good solid grasp on reality. I myself was drawn to the idea of the strong wise woman raising a girl child on her own. The book works best when it recognizes different points of view and calmly points them out without screaming or battering you over the head with the moral. In fact, even as I write this, I realize that this is a story about morality in the finest sense. It's about accepting others and being true to what is good and pure in human beings, regardless of religion or beliefs. And in today's madcap world, that's exactly the kind of message we should be striving to get out there more and more. A gem.

A lesson for all
By A. Cormier
This is a very well told story. Wise Child, the daughter of Finbar, a man of the sea, and Maeve the Fair, who abandoned her when she was an infant, is orphaned when her grandmother passes away. When the villagers are asked to take her in, none have room. This is when Juniper steps forward and offers her home, much to the chagrin of Fillan, the village priest, who believes her to be a pagan witch, while he believes there is only room for one religion in the world.

The story tells of the powerful bond that is forged between Wise Child and Juniper, and how that bond is tested many times, especially when Maeve shows up asking Wise Child to come away with her, to live the life of a princess. As well, the tail describes the ways of the Doran and the difference between dark and white "magic".

And yes, there is a lesson to be learned. That FEAR and IGNORANCE can be very powerful tools, even when you can't truly believe in the end result.

As a volunteer reader for a radio reading service, I spend a lot of time reading YA and Juvenile literature. Though I cannot do this novel justice (The main characters being female), I am still recommending it be recorded for our listeners, because everyone can learn something from this.
