Only for Students of Religous Apologetics
By Reader From Aurora
The Gospel of Barnabas (GB) is a well known late-medieval forgery (most likely 15th or 16th Century Spain) which purports to be a lost or suppressed gospel by the apostle Barnabas. This edition is a re-release of the Ragg's early twentieth century translation amended to incorporate opening comments from an Islamic apologetic perspective. I offer the following thoughts for potential readers.

This book is probably only of interest for serious students of religious apologetics and religious history. Despite the publisher's claim the GB is not, nor has it ever been, recognized as a legitimate historic text by main stream scholars. It does, however, have some appeal for the insight it provides into popular apologetics.

Perhaps the GB's most interesting aspect is its enduring appeal as an apologetic tool. Undoubtably historic texts can make effective evangelizing tools - the GB, however, appears to be poorly suited for this role. It is a clearly an inauthentic document and exposes a message contrary to the religion in professes to support.

With regard to authenticity its challenges are numerous:

- it refers to jubilees occurring every 100 years rather than every fifty as was the case in the early Christian epoch (changed to 100 years intervals in 14th century)

- uses the fourth century Latin vulgate translation of the Bible (challenging for first century author)

- claims that Jesus was born when Pilate was governor (26 or 27 A.D.)

- claims that Nazareth is a seashore or lakeshore village

- despite the editors apparent attempt to confuse GB with the first century Epistle of Barnabus or the fifth century apocryphal Acts of Barnabas there is no reference to this text by either Christian or Islamic writers prior to approximately 1600

Despite it fabricated nature, perhaps what makes its use as an apologetic tool even more surprising is its heretical theology:

- contrary to Quran Mohammad is portrayed as a Christ-like entity

- the world was created for Muhammad

- Muhammad is an intercessor between God and man

- Contradicts Quran claim that Jesus is the Messiah

Overall, GB is an interesting read for students of religious apologetics. I cannot recommend the text for a broader audience - it is replete with misrepresentation and fabrication. Readers seeking a more serious examination of GB can see David Sox's the Gospel of Barnabas. Those interested in a discussion of GB within the genre of religious forgies may find J. Slomp's work helpful (some available for free on net). Those interested in serious comparative apologetics may wish to look at a series of public debates between Shabir Ally and William Craig.

A must-have book for your library. This book completes the chain of Law of God between Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon them all. The foreword introduced is also very informative by Mr. Armiya (Aramaic) Nu'man. May God bless the humble truth seekers. Barak Allaha feekum in kun tum iyyah ta'bud.

This is an important book
By David Rasch
especially for those who are interested in moslem claims about Christianity. This is a foundation work islamists who suggest Christ is a moslem and prophesied mohammad's birth and career and claimed he, Jesus, was a moslem. It would take a long essay to detail the errors in just the introduction. But this intro demonstrates the way moslems approach facts and history. This led me to question the accuracy of the text itself.

The new edition of this classroom classic retains the organizing theme of the original text, presenting the development of thought within the context of economic history. Economic ideas are framed in terms of the spheres of production and circulation, with a critical analysis of how past theorists presented their ideas.

Interesting, Deep Scholarship, but clear Bias
By JrShotty
First of all, I want to say that I think this is a very good book for the history of economic theory. I did enjoy reading it, and while I have a few problems with the text, I still believe the text was well worth my time and money.

With that said, the bias in the book is a minor irritant at most points. The coauthors clearly respect the heterodox, value theory of labor thinkers much more than thinkers like Say, Bastiat, or the Austrians. I found this good at first, bc I had not had much experience with Post-Marxist thinkers, and wanted to get to know them. The problem, however, is when the coauthors skim over problems with the labor theory of value. The section on the Transformation Problem implies that there the whole issue is an illusion, and that Marx resolved it. While this is a viable point of view, to skim over such a significant point of contention seems to be unwise. For another example, the Marginalists and mathematical economics in general is considered to be superfluous and unimportant.

These issues do not detract from the great scholarship at other points in the work. The vast majority of the text is a fast, fascinating page turner (yes, apparently that is possible for history of economic thought). I highly recommend this book for either personal reading or for use in a classroom, but the bias of the coauthors must be kept in mind.

Anchoring a Short Bookshelf on Our Current Economic Crisis
By Michael G. Shafto
Review of E.K. Hunt & Mark Lautzenheiser, 'History of Economic Thought: A Critical Perspective (third edition)'
This book reflects impressive expertise and extensive scholarship. It is timely in light of the current world-wide economic meltdown, providing the essential concepts and historical background to let readers interpret the news of the day and to anticipate some likely future events. I have to give it 5 stars because its strengths greatly outweigh its weaknesses. I will detail just a few of those strengths before turning to some obvious gaps. Major strengths: (1) the authors are card-carrying economic theorists, and they present their material from the perspective of Economics insiders; this is a great strength, but it also leads to some weaknesses mentioned below; (2) the book is consistently well-written, though occasionally the reader may be confused by some technicalities; better to err in this direction than the opposite, however; (3) the treatment of Marx, Veblen, Sraffa, and others is a welcome corrective to their usual cursory dismissal by the mainstream; even the discussion of Adam Smith is enlightening; (4) topics like alienation of labor, mystification of class relations by mainstream ideology, and the inexorable rise of the military-industrial complex gain new force by being clearly linked to a centuries-old capitalist dynamic. It is particularly interesting to see how Marx's critique was anticipated in many ways by some of the revered founding fathers of economics, the earliest defenders and advocates of capitalism.
As for weaknesses, these can be summed up in one point: for 'A Critical Perspective,' this book is not critical enough. The reason, as mentioned above, is that the authors keep to a disciplinary perspective well within academic Economics. For example, they have little or no systematic leverage when it comes to incorporating "externalities" like unsustainable population growth and dramatic depletion of energy and other natural resources. As a supplemental set of readings, the following is a very short list which expands the disciplinary perspective, first from Political Economy to "Economic Politics" (Jay Hanson, 'From Capitalism To Democracy'), then to Anthropology and Sociology beyond industrial societies (Marvin Harris, 'Cultural Materialism'), then to Biology and Physics (Meadows, Randers, & Meadows, 'Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update'), and finally to individual and group decision making: Behavioral Economics, as represented in the work of Herbert A. Simon, Vernon Smith, Daniel Kahneman, and Amos Tversky -- all of whom are mentioned cursorily by Hunt & Lautzenheiser -- and the vivid picture of class arrogance in Karen Zouwen Ho's 'Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street,' which is not mentioned. Most of these items have to do with thinking straight about cause and effect. A good guide to thinking straight about means and ends is John Rawls's 'A Theory of Justice.'
The 5-star rating is still warranted, because that short bookshelf, which is anchored by 'History of Economic Thought,' only adds support for the authors' fundamental critical perspective, drawing that support from a range of disciplines related to Economics.

This book is why I'm in grad school.
By Emaebe
I love Hunt's History of Economic Thought. I own the first edition, and it is so marked up with highlighting and underlining that I decided to invest in the 2nd edition for my graduate level history of economic thought course. I would rank this as a high undergraduate level book- it lays down history of economic thought in a clear and (somewhat) concise manner. It is very easy to understand, and the book is an enjoyable read (if you like to learn about the development of economic thought). There are definitely other books which are good for learning about economic doctrines, but Hunt's book is a solid foundation.

American Dream: Three Women, Ten Kids, and a Nation's Drive to End Welfare, by Jason DeParle

In this definitive work, two-time Pulitzer finalist Jason DeParle cuts between the mean streets of Milwaukee and the corridors of Washington to produce a masterpiece of literary journalism. At the heart of the story are three cousins whose different lives follow similar trajectories. Leaving welfare, Angie puts her heart in her work. Jewell bets on an imprisoned man. Opal guards a tragic secret that threatens her kids and her life. DeParle traces  their family history back six generations to slavery and weaves poor people, politicians, reformers, and rogues into a spellbinding epic.

With a vivid sense of humanity, DeParle demonstrates that although we live in a country where anyone can make it, generation after generation some families don’t. To read American Dream is to understand why.

Amazon.com Review
More than a decade after presidential candidate Bill Clinton floated the idea of ending "welfare as we know it," the changes to the system have become so accepted and entrenched that it is difficult to remember the heated controversy surrounding the issue of reform. Jason DeParle, a social policy reporter for The New York Times, forcefully brings the subject to life in American Dream, a moving and informed examination of the challenges, complexities, successes, and failures involved in fixing our nation's ailing welfare system. Tracing the lives of three women and their children as legislative changes are pushed through Washington and the state of Wisconsin, DeParle puts an extraordinarily human face on a subject that is too often prone to ideological oversimplification. As DeParle adeptly shows, their story "of adversity variously overcome, compounded, or merely endured ... embodies the story of welfare writ large."

The three compelling women at the heart of DeParle's narrative are vastly different temperamentally, yet they share the abstract qualities of strength and endurance, as well as extended family ties. DeParle paints their portraits with respect and sensitivity, and he provides a marvelous family history that reveals how "the story of welfare" is painfully "tangled in the story of race." Our glimpse at these difficult lives and the forces that profoundly shape them inspire an equal measure of hope and disappointment, and a large measure of outrage. As these remarkably resilient women struggle to raise their families, corruption is exposed in the very offices charged with implementing the newly adopted reforms. DeParle accepts that removing nine million women and children from the welfare rolls represents enormous progress. However, he simultaneously recognizes that we are dismally failing to confront a consequence of welfare reform: a new class of working poor. --Silvana Tropea

From Publishers Weekly
While campaigning for president in 1992, Bill Clinton vowed to "end welfare as we know it"; four years later, the much publicized slogan evolved into a law that sent nine million women and children off the rolls. New York Times reporter DeParle takes an eye-opening look at the controversial law through the lives of three black women affected by it, all part of the same extended family, and at the shapers of the policy. He moves back and forth between the women's tough Milwaukee neighborhoods and the strategy sessions and speeches of Clinton, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson and others. But the best parts of the book are its slices of life: DeParle accompanies the women on trips to the dentist, on visits to loved ones in jail, to job-training workshops and on travels to Mississippi. He offers few solutions for breaking the cycle of poverty and dependency in America, but DeParle's large-scale conclusion is that moving poor women into the workforce contributed to declines in crime, teen pregnancy and crack use.

From The New Yorker
In the years after 1996, when President Clinton signed welfare-reform legislation, nine million women and children left the country's welfare rolls. Though the exodus was applauded in Washington, the story of exactly how these families were faring remained, in DeParle's words, a "national mystery." DeParle spent these years in Milwaukee, welfare reform's unofficial capital, studying the lives of three former welfare mothers: Jewell, Opal, and Angie. The narrative pans across generations of poverty—the women's grandparents sharecropped cotton—while, in the present, results vary. Opal tumbles into crack addiction, but the others struggle ahead, ultimately earning nine and ten dollars an hour as nursing assistants; Angie even joins a 401(k) plan. They are welfare-reform "successes," but their lives remain precarious. When there isn't enough money, lights are turned off and children go hungry. "Just treading water," Angie says, surveying her progress. "Just making it, that's all."

An authentic look inside real lives of women on welfare.
By Theresa Welsh
This book helped me find answers to a question I've wondered about since my years as a welfare case worker in Detroit way back in the 1960s. Yes, I have often wondered: What happened to all those Moms who used to get ADC checks and all the women who might have gotten them if Bill Clinton had not decided to "end welfare as we know it."

Did we create hordes of new poor and homeless people? Was "ending welfare" an act of cruelty towards the destitute, or was it a gentle shove for poor women into a working life?

The answer is complicated, but, surprisingly (at least to me), it appears to fall more into the positive side than as an act of abandonment of mothers in need. It turns out that women on welfare actually had more options than just collecting a welfare check. Many actually had jobs off and on that they did not report, and they also had boyfriends who contributed (they didn't report this either).

My employment as a case worker came while I was still in college; it was the 1960s and I was young and dumb. I patrolled a "zone" on the west side of Detroit where virtually every house had someone getting a government check. The houses were densely packed in this poor neighborhood, so I walked from one house to another to visit the mothers (and one father) on my caseload. I was somewhat shocked that virtually ALL the children were born out of wedlock (that was shocking to a young woman who had recently attended Catholic schools).

While the author traces the mothers of the three women whose lives he chronicles back to the James Eastland cotton plantation in Mississippi, in my own caseload, the women were much closer to the cotton fields. Many of them told me they had only gone to the third grade in school because they had to drop out to pick cotton. A substantial number of them were illiterate and signed their names with an X. They were less employable than Angie, Jewell and Opal in the book.

I wrote about my experiences as an ADC worker (then called simply "Aid to Dependent Children") and revisiting my old "zone" at my website (theseekerbooks).

I was impressed with the level of involvement the author had with the women whose lives he describes. He obviously became a factor in their lives as he spent time talking with them and ferrying them for visits to prisons holding various boyfriends. He liberally quotes the people he writes about (including the typical black way of speaking) and describes chaotic situations in their home. Clearly, he got to know them, and win their trust. This approach has the advantage of "making it real" through seeing the hardships and pain of poverty first-hand. But it can limit understanding the role of welfare to what can be gleaned from the situation of those whose lives he enters. Still, the story he tells is powerful, and there is much to learn from the experiences of Angie, Jewell, Opal and their offspring.

I share the author's surprise that it turned out that women on welfare (at least in the years of the 1990s when the "Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996" -- the "end welfare" law -- was passed) could fairly quickly get jobs. In fact, many were already working, but just not reporting their income. It also became apparent that the women did not value the government check quite as much as the public thought they did. When you asked them to attend classes or do just about anything that might be an inconvenience, many just walked away and gave up their check. The law left it to the states to decide on time limits and work requirements to continue getting a welfare check, and there was a lot of talk about providing job training, but mostly it came down to "get a job."

But were these former welfare recipients better off when they were working as opposed to staying home with their kids? the answer is unclear. Certainly, their children had a hard time. Most were employed at such low pay that they were not better off financially, and many found themselves chronically behind on their rent and running out of food before payday.

But was there a benefit from "the dignity of work" itself? I found this question an interesting inversion of the basic premise behind ADC when I was a caseworker. The basic idea then was that children need their mothers in the home, taking care of them. Back in the 1950s and into the 1960s, the idea of a family was a man going to a job each day and a woman staying home and raising their children and, by the way, the man and the woman were married (to each other). That idea began changing in the 1960s, and by the 1980s it had morphed into the idea that a family was a man and woman (maybe married) raising children and both working to pay the bills. Bill Clinton thought children would be proud of a mother who worked (as his mother did)... and that work brought with it a pride in accomplishment.

All I can say about this is that times change. We have not actually abandoned the poor to having to manage on minimum wages. The "earned income credit" at tax time has been a tremendous help (and cheap, with no big bureaucracy needed to administer it). We still have food stamps, some states have expanded Medicaid, and there are various programs to help with child care. There is no doubt that single Moms living on minimum wages have a hard time, and (in my humble opinion) should receive more help. I am glad to see so much support for an increase in the minimum wage.

The author also points out that programs that help both men and women can do a lot; the children he got to know suffered without their fathers, and the fathers themselves got little help to find real employment. Most of the men in the lives of these three women ended up dealing drugs and some went to prison. Helping women is a fine idea, but helping families (married or not) is an even better idea.

Jason DeParle has given us a wonderful book based on the experiences of real people whose lives were touched by the former welfare system and by its ending. If you have ever wondered what happened to all the people who used to get welfare checks, I highly recommend "American Dream" and wonder what happened to Angie, Jewell and Opal since this book first appeared in print in 2004.

A great book about some awful realities
By James Gerofsky
American Dream is truly an excellent read, one of the best books that a wonk like me has seen in a long, long time. What a great idea: discuss a public policy issue by showing what does and doesn't happen to a handful of real, living people being affected by it. Are there books like this about abortion, the death penalty, school vouchers, etc.? I hope that someone is writing a similar book right now about the black male problem. As Mr. DeParle makes clear, the problems encountered by black females and children coming off welfare won't truly be solved until our nation does something to help keep black males off the streets and out of jail.

To summarize the welfare debate in a nutshell, conservatives had been complaining for four decades that the liberalized AFDC welfare system fostered dependency amidst its recipients and was the driving factor behind family breakdown and continuing poverty. Liberals were able to fight these contentions off, arguing correctly that most welfare beneficiaries were women who faced a legitimate crisis (divorce, injury, sickness, etc.) and used welfare for a short period in order to get their lives together. They were successful until about 1983, when a study performed by two bona fide Harvard liberals (David Ellwood and Mary Jo Bane) showed that although the majority of welfare recipients were short-term, one-time users, a small portion of recipients did stay for a long time, and thus absorbed a disproportionate share of federal and state welfare funding. Conservatives seized on this and gained political momentum, eventually putting President Clinton in a position where the status quo was no longer viable. Thus, in 1996, "welfare as we know it" came to an end, replaced by a time-limited, "work first" system.

DeParle did not introduce a "typical" AFDC recipient in this book, i.e. one who went on welfare during a family crisis, used the money to get her life back together, and got off for good within 20 months. (It's too bad that he didn't; it would have added a bit of depth, showing what's at stake when you let states control the entry gate.) He found three women who could have been poster children for the anti-welfare conservatives (posters with bulls-eye rings, that is). He then showed us some surprising things about them, surprising to a white suburbanite like me anyway. First off: they did work. Conservatives said that welfare made them not want to work, and bureaucrats said that they couldn't work and receive welfare. But work and receive welfare they did. Second . . . . well, I won't let all the cats out of the bag. But Angie, Jewell and Opal showed us that both the conservatives and liberals were wrong, and neither group really understood women like them (and probably still don't).

DeParle gets extra points for tracing the family roots of his three main characters back to the Mississippi delta in the days of slavery and reconstruction. It's rather clear that a lot of the problems and patterns of life that affect women like Angie, Jewell and Opal can't be seperated and considered independently of the bad old days. He also brings the story up to date (2004), where the children seem to be succumbing to the same life patterns of struggle and disadvantage that overtook their mothers and fathers. Having full-time working mothers does not appear to be the magic bullet for the next generation.

DeParle concludes with some simple, common sense recommendations for the future. He doesn't suggest that we go back to the days of AFDC. He couldn't. The welfare rolls were cut by more than half in the late 90s and children are not starving in the streets . But the question of whether the children of poverty now have a better chance to escape the fate of their parents, or even get by as well as they did, is definitely in play. In 1991, David Ellwood, responding to conservatives who co-opted his study on welfare dependency, suggested a deal: take unlimited welfare away, but make work worthwhile for those with minimal education and job experience, i.e. those headed for $6 or $7 an hour "careers" at McDonalds or a nursing home. This deal would involve government support for child care, transportation, health insurance, after school programs, wage supplements and job advancement training. So far, Ellwood's deal has been implemented mostly on the "take away" side. Other than an enhanced earned income tax credit, not much has been provided to "make work worthwhile" for low-wage workers in the post-unionization era. DeParle makes a strong case that it's time to make good on that side of the deal.

Just a few of many unforgettable vignettes in American Dream: a mother sending her teenage daughter to spend a "getaway weekend" with a friend of the family who happens to be a prostitute; a teenage boy with few male role models who dreams of becoming a pimp after having one around the house; another teenage boy who won't forgive his father for refusing to turn states evidence against his colleagues in a drug gang encounter where a teen girl was accidentally shot and killed (thus gaining a long jail sentence); a woman succumbing to crack, and yet having more and more children (despite the end of welfare as we knew it); a live-in boyfriend who dies after having a car battery dropped on his head by an angry woman who broke into the house; rampant confusion, chaos, and melancholia amongst the staff of the leading work placement agency; greed and corruption amidst its management; and yet, a case worker who, for just a little while, decides to overcome it all by dreaming the impossible dream and tilting at a windmill-like system on behalf of his clients.

Kudos, Mr. DeParle, for a job well done. If only we could say something similar to the architects of "post welfare".

Powerful insight and a great read
By Bennett Johnston
I have long been interested in social policy and the politics of welfare. That said, I don't read alot of books on the subject anymore--most don't justify the investment of time, attention and money. This book stands out because of Deparle's extraordinary ambition in tracing the roots of intergenerational poverty; his excellent analysis of a broad, complex subject; and his exceptional skills as a writer and storyteller. This book is a good read!

Review
This book is simply far superior to anything else I have seen written on this opening—my own book included. The narrative, the explanatory prose, the analysis, the countless improvements, new ideas and so on, makes this book phenomenally splendid. If you want to understand how to play this opening, then this book is a perfect place to start.
(Carsten Hansen ChessCafe.com)

The author is constantly pointing out the positional consequences of the various thematic ideas throughout the lines. There are times when his research will almost certainly change the future course of theory. Whatever your connection to Nimzo, make sure that you get hold of a copy. An absolute must.
(Grandmaster Glenn Flear)

An outstanding book. Sokolov banks up his verbal assessments with concrete variations, but the prose is much more valuable for the layman rated below 2400, who will remember the helpful advice long after the analysis has been forgotten.

A Strong GM Reveals His Opening Preparation
By Christopher J. Falter
Sokolov has been playing the Rubinstein Variation of the Nimzo-Indian (1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e3) throughout his long and notable career; he even used it to defeat then-world champ Garry Kasparov in 1999. The reader would expect Sokolov to deliver a high-quality and detailed analysis of the Rubinstein that includes some novelties, then--and the author does not disappoint.

As Sokolov explains, with 4. e3 "White plays a natural developing move, ignoring for the time being Black's bishop on b4 and keeping his options open." The author divides the book into 4 parts based on black's responses:

I) Various (black fourth moves other than castles kingside)
II) 4...O-O Minor Lines
III) 4...O-O 5. Bd3 d5 6. Nf3
IV) 4...O-O 5. Bd3 d5 6. Nf3 c5 7. O-O dxc4 8. Bxc4

Each chapter begins by introducing the main ideas for black and white. For example, in the Reykjavik Line (4...O-O 5. Bd3 d5 6. Nf3 d5 7. O-O Nc6 8. a3 Ba5), "Black does not want to determine the central pawn structure, he still keeps his bishop pair and wants to take on c3 under better circumstances, when it will create double c-pawns for White." Sokolov then provides his analysis of previous games for both sides, sprinkling in little comments about why a particular move order is chosen (e.g., "White has more space and Black has some concrete problems"). Sokolov's source games range from 1960s classics by Petrosian and Geller to Kramnik's innovations in 2011. Not infrequently he provides his own analysis for several critical moves, typically in a situation where he is revealing one of his novelties. In the Reykjavik line, for example, he overturns the consensus of easy black equality with a novel 13th move that culminates in a promising exchange sacrifice on move 20. He concludes each chapter with a summary; however, the quality is a bit uneven here. Usually he mentions which lines are critical and why (which is good), but occasionally he gives an uninstructive generalization, such as "I advise the reader to study the material, trying to understand the general plans and the strategic motifs/rules, and then apply the lines he feels the most comfortable with." And practice your tactics while you're at it....

Sokolov's labor of love would make a good addition to the library of the strong club player and up who expects to play either side of the Rubinstein Variation. However, as Sokolov does not really explore the typical middlegames and endgames that ensue, I would not recommend it straight away to the beginning or intermediate club player. Sokolov does discuss the typical middlegames in his 2009 companion volume, the excellent Winning Chess Middlegames: An Essential Guide to Pawn Structures, which lavishes attention on Nimzo-Indian pawn structures and middlegame plans. In the introduction to this book, Sokolov recommends that studying his middlegame book before selecting opening repertoire lines, and I would concur. Read his excellent Winning Chess Middlegames: An Essential Guide to Pawn Structures first, and then come back to the present book for your detailed opening preparation.

Probably the lowest rating I have ever given to a chess book on here
By WuvMuffin
The problem whenever I buy chess books is that I tend to have huge expectations depending on the author and try and find some sort of redeeming value in those books if those expectations fall short. Most consumers think the same way as well so we base our "consumer instincts" on authorities (reviewers) and/or companies or authors we have long trusted, etc.. depending on whether we wish to continue making these "risk-free purchases." I think before this the lowest rating I gave was a four stars out of five to Neil McDonald's, "Ruy Lopez: Move by Move," and that book redeemed itself in readability by being focused and well-structured. With that being said, "Ruy Lopez: Move by Move" is to some extent somewhat theoretically non-critical in the same sense that Matthew Sadler's "Queen's Gambit Declined Trilogy" was and provided insight to some middle game positions not exclusive to the Ruy Lopez complex like the Boleslavsky Hole.

Upon receiving this book I thought this book was actually an encyclopedia on the Rubinstein complex but learned after much reading is actually a repertoire with wide coverage, for White. I didn't mind this but I felt that some parts of the book were gorgeously written for it's insight and content while other parts felt very, very rushed (some parts were not very well covered in terms of width and some evaluations I could not understand as being "Better for White" when in actuality the evaluation was just too optimistic). But kudos to Sokolov for at least trying to take on covering most of the Rubinstein complex seeing as concrete evaluation in that variation is in my opinion, quite blurry to judge with or without a computer (in the Classical Fianchetto variation Sokolov would end a line in the notes with White being better while my computer would tell me it is equal and I agree with almost no experience in that line because of the exchange of mutual inconveniences in the position and that Black can still be able to improve his position while at the same time fending off White's somewhat less than effective minority attack in not the Carlsbad structure in which Black can happily play ...c5 whenever White plays b5, if of course, Black stays away from playing ...a6. Granted, his main line coverage against the Classical Fianchetto is a very convincing way of playing against that specific move-order (7.a3!), although there was one side line I was hoping he would cover but didn't). I also found his coverage against some of the 5. Bd3 Rubinstein to be overly optimistic for White but does think that the Hubner is a highly underrated system for Black and does cover that chapter in a surprisingly honest manner. Also, when I bought this book, I wanted to play the Karpov variation of the 5. Bd3 Rubinstein but after reading this chapter, I am quite convinced that only Karpov should play the Karpov variation because Sokolov seems to have found a naggingly small plus for White everywhere and this time I do not feel that he was being overly optimistic but granted, play and evaluation in the Karpov variation tends to be very concrete. His coverage in the Parma and ... Qc7 + ... Nc6 variations are excellent.

Also, another evaluation from Sokolov I found blurry is in the following variation:

1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 e6
3. Nc3 Bb4
4. e3 0-0
5. Bd3 d5
6. Ne2 dxc4
7. Bxc4 e5
8. 0-0 Nc6
9. a3 Bd6
10. d5 Ne7
11. Ng3

Sokolov goes on to discuss how this position resembles a certain line in the QGA shows us a line where White plays in style of that QGA line he showed us and shows us how Black is fine. But then he shows us three ways White can get an advantage after 11. ... Nf5 to exchange a set of Knights. Two of the White lines Sokolov shows us discusses ways to turn Black's ... c7 pawn into a permanent weakness but neglects to give the reader any coverage on the position after Black plays the spineless 11. ... c6 with the idea of stimulating exchanges along the d-file as well as avoiding the aforementioned ... c7 pawn weakness. But you can't really blame the author for covering depth when the database is made for the width.

His work on lines where White plays 5. Ne2 (Reshevsky variation) was very well written. He shows his readers why White should play c5 against 4. e3 c5 and why c5 doesn't work against 4. e3 0-0. Against 4. e3 0-0, he recommends that White play either lines with cxd5 in order to fix the structure and Fianchetto or lines with Ng3.

Still despite my very mixed feelings about this book I also felt that this might be one of Sokolov's weakest works but definitely better than his book on the 4. Qc2 Nimzo Indian. I was quite impressed by his book on the Ruy Lopez and his Pawn Structure book which were pretty much recent. I would also say that it is slightly better than Carsten Hansen's book on the 4. e3 Nimzo (although typical of Gambit Publications, it was easier to scour for specific lines in the Hansen book), but isn't on top of it in the width analysis department, but definitely beats Hansen's book in prose and depth of analysis. But I hope takes his time on his next book on the Nimzo-Indian Samisch because this book could have been flawless. Original analysis? Tons, but will be hard to sift through, but it's the insight that makes this book swell to work with.

This book is definitely worth a Nimzo-Indian player's money if he/she plays either side of the Rubinstein. Sokolov annotates a lot of the lines in the notes as well as his main lines but if you don't mind working hard on trying to sift through this tome, you will most indefinitely be rewarded. At first I found this book to be very hard to go through due to the specific nature of the prose in the main line and the notes. But with an opening book like this, it's best if the reader takes one's time on this book rather than plowing through a book from the "Move by Move" series. But once you get used to the content, I suspect that this book will have quite a long shelf life. But reader beware, get this book only if there is a specific handling of the Rubinstein for White that you would like to get coverage for because Sokolov will basically recommend his entire book to you to go through until you find something (which also works, I guess) unless you have a good idea of what you want to do in this complex.

But the one thing that would have made this book a perfect five stars would be the structure. The book is written in a strange quasi-full games format which actually makes this book very hard to use because of it's width and depth. I think a variation tree format or multiple games per chapter format would make this book a lot more user friendly because he would just cite a transposition in the notes into another line under two players which requires me to flip back 3-4 pages and actually find that specific line under another note.

Anyways, sorry this review was so hard to read. I will definitely come back and re-structure this review some time soon.

Bad format.
By Mr. Michael C. McGee
The information in this book is no doubt useful, if you can wade through the confusing format. There is analysis that starts on say move 11, but the stem game is two pages back. It is all over the shop.

The First-Created Man: Seven Homilies

The First Created Man is a collection of seven homilies which deal with Adam s fall and our redemption by Jesus Christ.

A knowledge of the beginning and end of all things is essential for us to understand the purpose of our existence here on this earth, and what lies beyond it. For a true interpretation of the first and last things, we must turn to those teachers who beheld the beginning and end in a state of divine vision. Among these great seers was St. Symeon the New Theologian (949 1022): he speaks of the mysteries of the beginning and end precisely because he has seen them.

St. Symeon s profound homilies on Adam and the future age give the theological foundation for the Christian life of struggle. The original state of man from which Adam fell tells of our deepest nature, of which our present fallen nature is a corruption that is to be overcome; and the future state of blessedness is the goal to which our Christian struggle is aimed, and to which we can attain, by God s grace, despite our fallen state.

These homilies of St. Symeon have been selected, translated, and introduced by Fr. Seraphim Rose with the aim of reconnecting modern man with the ancient understanding of the true purpose of life.

Adam did not wish to say, 'I sinned,' but said rather the contrary of this and placed the blame for transgression upon God Who created everything 'very good,' saying to Him, 'The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I ate.' And after him, she placed the blame on the serpent, and they did not wish at all to repent and beg forgiveness of Him."

An Orthodox theologian for the Western mind
By Seth Aaron Lowry
Of all the material I have read dealing with the creation of Adam and Eve and their subsequent fall from innocence and holiness, Saint Symeon's homilies are among the best. Considering the limited material that Symeon has to deal with, I am amazed at the level of insight and knowledge that he gleens from the text. Symeon deals with such topics as Adam's and Eve's original created state and their purpose in the garden of Eden. Being of an Orthodox persuasion Symeon sees a strong message of Theosis in the beginning of Genesis. He argues that Adam and Eve were created holy and sinless, but that they were not created perfect since they still had the potential to sin and bring death and suffering into the world. Adam and Eve were created as innocent children who needed to grow in holiness as they obeyed the Lord and followed Him.
One portion of this book that I really liked was Saint Symeon's homily on the events immediately after the fall. Symeon understands God's calling to Adam in the garden as God's attempt to bring Adam and Eve to repentance and to ackowledge their wrong doing. God was giving them every opportunity to repent and he would have shown them mercy had they only admitted their trangression and sought God's forgiveness. This was an angle I had never even thought of before and really made me appreciate this section of the Genesis story. In addition, I love how Symeon understood Christ's work on the cross as the remedy to the disobedience in Eden. Just as Adam disobeyed at a tree and brought death and suffering into the world, Christ's obedience at the tree brought life and hapiness to those who believe in Him.
I really think individuals from a Western Christian perspective could really benefit from Saint Symeon's teachings. There are so many elements in his homilies that are similar to Protestant teaching, that I think people would find much to agree with. The Orthodox are often accused of having a less severe view of the fall and sin than the West, but Symeon's own words completely shatter this false assertion. Symeon refers to Adam's trangression as an act that brought a sinful nature upon all humanity. Symeon states that people sin because they are slaves to sin and not vice versa, and he even argues that everyone is unrighteous before God, even infants, because all are partakers in Adam's nature. I believe that Protestants will find much to agree with here, and they will also understand that the Orthodox do not take the sin issue lightly. Moreover, Symeon often refers to God's punishments as chastisements upon mankind for disobedience. Although chastisements are different than the Augustinian idea of judicial punishments, both the East and the West can agree that such maladies are God's response to man's sin. Although there are some differnces in thought I believe that everyone will benefit by reading this great theologian of the Eastern Church.

A wonderful group of Homilies
By Joseph B. Howard
St. Symeon the New Theologian is often overlooked in the Western Church, but thankfully this is changing. This selection of his homilies concerning the fall of Adam and the nature of the Fall-Redemption relationship is very good; I recommend it highly. Father Seraphim's translation reads very well and allows one to focus upon the message of the text rather than on deciphering the writing. All in all, this is a wonderful book for anyone interested in Christian thought, be they Orthodox or no.

The Sin of Adam and the Redemption of Man
By zonaras
_The First Created Man_, compiled, edited and translated by Seraphim Rose, is a selection of seven Homilies by the St. Symeon the New Theologian concerning the sin of Adam, the fall from Paradise and the redemption brought about by Christ. St. Symeon is one of only three in the Church who have attainted the title "Theologian": the other two being St. John the Evangelist (of the Apostles) and St. Gregory of Nazianzus (of the Fathers of the Church). St. Symeon was a highly influential monk and abbot in the 10th and 11th century Byzantine Empire. He wrote extensively on theological topics and remains one of the most respected teachers in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Fr. Seraphim's translation comes from the Russian translation of the original Greek by St. Theophan the Recluse, a 19th century Russian bishop. The first part of the book is an introduction to the life and teachings of St Symeon. The second part is the seven Homilies. Man, when he first lived in Paradise/Eden, was not distracted and out of direct contact with the Divine as he is today. He did not have to strive against creation to survive, and was not burdened by the pain, hunger, thirst, lusts of the flesh and endless toil unto death that sums up human existence since the Fall. When Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit against God's commandment, they did not receive Divine Mercy at that point because they did not repent of their sin and had listened to the councils of the serpent. God, in time, did redeem man from his cursed state, in the person of Jesus Christ, who died so that man may be free from death and have life with God in Heaven, a return to Paradise, a return to the original Golden Age. The Cross/tree that Jesus was pinned on to save man is the counterpart of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden that destroyed man. At the end of time, teaches St. Symeon, God will create the new Heaven and Earth. The material world will be dissolved by the Divine fire and the new Earth will be one in which there is direct communion with God, the pure essence of Being that transcends all that can be perceived by the senses or human thought.

Review
“Whenever a character comes back as many times as Chief Superintendent Wycliffe, a reviewer is faced with a dilemma: What can you say that you haven't already said? We called attention to Burley's solid plotting, well-described and colorful settings, and intriguing characters . . . Finally, we have no choice but to repeat ourselves by emphasizing one more time how pleasurable the familiar conventions of the genre can be in the hands of a writer as good as Burley.”  —Booklist

First in the series
By Damaskcat
This is the first book in the Wycliffe series and the first one I have read though I can remember watching the television series many years ago. Wycliffe himself is an interesting character - very laid back and not keen on paper work. This is an interesting case. A woman with a mysterious past and an amoral present is found dead in a house she rents in a small Cornish village.

Many suspects present themselves to Wycliffe's calm and interested gaze and many people have secrets they really want to keep hidden both from the police and from their nearest and dearest.

When Wycliffe and his team start digging into the past they find that the victim's husband died in mysterious circumstances and one of her lovers almost died in a suspect road accident which has left him badly scarred. I liked the writing and the way the claustrophobic atmosphere of the small community is evoked. The characters and their motivations are well drawn and believable.

If you prefer your crime without graphic violence and bad language then give this series a try. This is crime writing in the classic mould and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading such authors as Patricia Wentworth, Georgette Heyer, Gladys Mitchell and Margery Allingham.

Surprised by the sexism
By Jeanajoan
This was written in 1968--I was 8. I guess I have forgotten how much anti-female rhetoric was acceptable. The females are vilified less than the two gay characters, but it was all pretty awful. I have read later books by him that were not so mean-spirited, so maybe he matured in his thinking or his editors did.

Readable but not exciting
By Jillian R
The detection is this book is reasonable. It's unfortunate that the main character Wycliffe is such a gloomy man with little love of humanity. Still, the book is readable.

Grade 5 Up For those not familiar with chibi, this is an exaggerated form of manga illustration that squashes the big-eyed characters down for a greater intensity of cuteness. Hart does an excellent job of introducing the concept and of explaining how the drawing technique for this particular style varies from normal manga, and why. Also included are a further exaggerated and simplified form of characters often used for making asides and a section devoted to drawing characters that are varying degrees of feline and human mix. Creative examples are given for all categories, with much potential for sparking the imagination. This volume is a good supplement to more basic manga drawing books that may be in most collections. A great thing about this book is that they have a large section of how to draw a variety of cat girls!!! That was my most favorite part! I really enjoyed this book alot, and as a bonus I will give you the run down of what to expect in the book....

The rest of the pictures are basically sample images showing you that you can use a chibi in certain scenes of regular sized characters, like when they are emabarrassed or mad. The chibi form of that person shows great expression, as well as hillarity. Plus chibis are ultra cute! This book is a perfect add on to any how to draw collection. I definitely recommend this book to any artist, whether beginner or intermediate, this book is extremely helpful. A must buy!

Awesome and Helpful BOOK!!!!
By Meher Darakshan
OMG! This was the best how-to book i have ever READ!!!!! It is so thorough. I could draw everything, and it came out near perfection. My friends loved, I loved, and heck, my GRANDFATHER loved it! He thought it was really, really good, in terms of teaching you how to draw! I loved it, and recommend it to everyone! The book shows you step by step how to draw cat-girls (beautiful) and cute tropical girl/chibi/cat-girl and other adorable creatures. It teaches you when to use super-deformed characters, and uses cute drawings (eg, questionable little angel (my fave!) to enable you to use different, effective techniques! This is chock-full of great things!

Chibi-fied
By J. Sherman
Christopher Hart's "Manga Mania" series continues with a how-to on creating supe-deformed characters, anthromorphic catgirls and furry characters. While Hart covers the creation chibis from the ground up, some experience with figure drawing is recommended for the catgirl section. And some of Hart's sample drawings, while unexpectedly good, don't exactly meet fanboy standards. But if you want to draw super-cute characters like the pros do, that's what this book--and practice--is for.
