Not what I expected, but not bad

Considering the book is called 'perfect phrases', well, I expected to find a collection of phrases, maybe organized by adjective or characteristic (e.g., organization, responsibility, work ethics). The book has really good pointers on how to make a better letter of recommendation, but I guess the title is misleading. It also contains many examples of reference letters, which is not very useful when one is trying to find a sentence that describes the student or colleague one is writing about. In summary, I think it is a good book, I just don't think it is very practical.

Book number five in the series is another five star book. The characters were very human and multidimensional throughout the book making it impossible for the reader to put down. The plot moves quickly and has many twists and turns,keeping the reader's attention throughout.

Great Book but may be a little difficult for the beginner

Holden sets out to write a history of Astrology concentrating on the changes in techniques rather than simply the social or economic context. His main thesis is that the use of the horoscope originated with Greek Astrologers based in Alexandria around the third and second centuries BCE. As the Babylonians did not use horoscopes, Holden gives them only cursory treatment in his history.

As a guide to the changing nature of Astrology, this book is excellent, dealing with Greek Astrology both before and after Ptolemy - who Holden shows was outside the mainistream of his day. He goes on to look at the contribution of a variety of Arabic speaking Astrologers and the development of the horoscopic approach through medieval times and eventually up to the present day. Holden illustrates many of his points with extracts from the writings of the Astrologers he is reviewing - which can sometimes be demanding because the prose can be somewhat obscure for the modern reader.

That being said, it is a very readable book, though some knowledge of Astrology, especially traditional Astrology will help the reader. There are intersting snippets, such as Dr. John Dee the Astrologer to Queen Elizabeth used to sign his notes to her as '007', with the cross of the 7 extended over the zeroes to represent a pair of eyes as Dee saw himself as the Queen's 'eyes'. This was picked on several centuries later by Ian Fleming as his source for James Bond's designation.

Holden also relates Alan Leo's brush with the law against 'Fortune Telling' in the early twentieth century - a brush which led to him concentrating on 'character' readings rather than predicitions and opened up the way for the shift towards a psychological approach to Astrology.

This book is not designed to show how to cast a horoscope or how to read one, so if that is what you are looking for then look elsewhere. For the reader who wants to know where Astrology came from, how it developed, and get some idea of the richness of the Astrological tradition this book is invaluable.

An authoritative unbiased overview of the history of astrology

James Holden has done his homework and gives us a scholarly history of horoscopic astrology. I have been an admirerer of his translations of the works of 17th century French astrologer Morin for quite some time, but I had not had the opportunity until recently to read this text. Anyone interested in a reliable history of western astrology will appreciate this book. Holden gives not only historical facts but also explains astrological techniques in vogue at various times in history. I highly recommend this book to all serious students of astrology. James Holden deserves to be honored by the astrological community for his many scholarly contributions to the art.

This book has more detailed historical information about which cultures contributed what to astrology than any other book. Scholarly work, but also very easy to read, unlike some of the extraordinarily dry fare one typically gets in academic books. Must have for serious astrologers, who want to know the origins of their craft.

She is responsible for leading the technical and operational aspects of the business, providing direction to developers, architects, contractors, and other project team members for successful integration of green strategies into the design process. Ms. Yellamraju has worked on numerous green and LEED projects, with a focus on multifamily and commercial buildings. She is a trained architect, and earned an M.S. in architecture specializing in energy and sustainable design. She has several years of experience in the architecture and construction industry and has managed many multimillion-dollar projects in the United States and India.

This is a great book! It provides easy-to-use guidance for newcomers to the LEED industry as well as useful information for seasoned LEED project managers. The case studies are very helpful.

He is the author of Green Cities: Urban Growth and the Environment (Brookings Institution Press 2006) and the co-author of Heroes and Cowards: The Social Face of War (Princeton University Press 2008). He is the author of Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter World (Basic Books 2010). His research areas include; environmental, urban, energy and real estate economics.

From the Author
Back in 1991, I taught environmental economics for the first time at the University of Chicago.  My 25 undergraduate students didn't know that they were "guinea pigs" as I presented some strange lectures about the causes and consequences of pollution.   Now 22 years have passed.  During these years, I have taught environmental and urban economics at Columbia, Harvard, Tufts, Stanford and UCLA.  After teaching thousands of students and writing many academic papers and three previous books, I have returned to my roots and have written a new type of environmental economics textbook.   This book embraces "free market environmentalism" as it applies basic price theory to understand urban environmental externalities.   I hope that a wide variety of different readers will sit down and read this book.   Students, business executives and national and local government officials can learn something about the "green economy" by reading its chapters.    Readers should be warned that I'm optimist who believes that we have the right incentives to devise "rules of the game" to improve our society's overall quality of life.  Economics is not the dismal science!

Essential for Anyone Who Cares About Environmental Issues

The book is extremely well-written and thoughtful, and it introduces some very complex ideas in the form of intuitive examples. It's thinner on the public choice than I would like and that would've cost it a star, but it gets five stars for a) being available for $1 (!!), b) for the resources like old exam questions and links to online lectures, and c) for being written in such a way as to appeal to anyone. I suspect that even people who have never studied economics will be able to follow the arguments and examples.

Strong ideas but polishing needed

This text contains a number of intriguing economic principles relating to the environment, is easy to understand, and very cheap! That being said, this text needs heavy editing. Some examples are weak or the conclusions are arrived at too quickly. The charts and graphs are so elementary. Still, I have a feeling this environment text is much more palatable than its competitors.

Enjoyable story

Upfront, the story has a HEA ending and is a welcome addition to the Thornehill Springs series. It is a sweet romance between widowed mom Ariel and Psychologist Mathias (Matt) Poole. Matt not only appreciates Ariel's subtle beauty but he is smitten with her daughter Dani. Throw in a censoring and critical mother-in-law and you have a recipe for drama. The author carefully deals with the issues of loss and lingering bereavement as seen through the eyes of several characters. Not to give anything away, I found myself pitying and understanding the former mother-in-law's controlling behavior. She could have been any mother after losing a child. Even Matt's father finally comes to terms with his own loss. Don't expect the characters to willingly confess their undying love for each other. Matt had commitment issues and Ariel had no desire to make him feel trapped. Matt, however, had other ideas; he was in it to win her heart and to protect his new family. I do recommend this book as an enjoyable read.

Lydia Rowan has again written an enjoyable read. The story was sweet and nicely written. While I have enjoyed some of her previous stories in this series more, I was not disappointed with the third installment. Both H & H were likable. I received an ARC for my honest review.
