About the Author

Dr. Stephen Porth is associate dean of the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University and a professor of management. He holds a PhD in business administration and strategy from Temple University, an MBA in marketing from Drexel University, and a BS in management from Saint Joseph’s. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of strategic management, leadership, management consulting, and business ethics. His research has been published extensively in management journals and he has written three books on strategy.

"Strategic Management: A Cross-Functional Approach" (SM) is one of those much needed, yet, rare finds that treats the organization for what it actually is/ought to be - a cooperative arrangement of functional departments/divisions of knowledge workers aimed at carrying out the firm's mission and vision.
SM, in some respects, acts as a bridge to facilitate contemporizing leadership-management with, what appears to be, a faint Systems and Quality Management ideology background, for the non Systems and QM-minded strategist.
Having reviewed a number of the more "popular" books before getting acquainted with SM, its content was "meticulously" examined and found to be an extremely well thought-out book. It is a contemporary, no frills, yet comprehensive treatment of the subject that takes into account some of the "best" of what has been written about leadership and management. Its ten chapters are succinct and to the point. Its diagrams are clear and concise. Its tables are practical and user friendly. A wealth of information packed in 266 pages.
SM encourages to analytically and critically examine different strategic management perspectives; integrate these perspectives with the individual knowledge centers of the firm; and, ultimately formulate unique company-oriented strategic models.
Unlike other business books that focus narrowly on a given functional area of business (accounting, human resources, information systems, logistics, marketing, operations and production, and research and development), SM is about looking at the enterprise from the big-picture perspective and connecting the dots. Its center of attention is the total organization, its industry, the competitive environment in which it operates, its long-term goals, its direction and strategy, its resources and competitive capabilities, and its opportunities for success.
SM is not about solving single problems or issues, confining one's analysis to a narrow functional area, or coming up with only one right answer. Instead, SM encourages to think and carry on strategically. That is, to think and act from a futuristic, and holistic organizational perspective, asking not "What is?," but "What is your destination?," "What future do you seek?," and more specifically, "Who are we?," "What we want to achieve?," and "How will we achieve our mission and objectives?" It also addresses, "What are we going to sell to?" "Who are our target customers?," and "How can we outdo or bypass the competition?"

Very strategically oriented from a Practical Perspective

This is the best book I have come across on this subject. An easy to read and simple to follow book, it is ideal for a bigger audience from a grad student to a corporate executive.

Stephen and team have done a terrific job in conveying the overall concept in understable terms. Inclusion of Behavioral aspects of strategic management was a good choice. I would like see to the newer editions include topics on innovation, this is one area where the book dilutes its focus.

PURE JASINDA WILDER PERFECTION!

"The only way past the pain is through it. You can't escape it. You can't ignore it. Pain, grief, anger, misery... they don't go away - they just increase and compound and get worse. You have to live through them, acknowledge them. You have to give your pain its due."

Jasinda Wilder, you complete me. Just when I thought nothing could ever compare to Falling into You, you gave me Becca and Jason and turned my world upside down. I will be honest, I was afraid of this book. I felt that a second book in the series would take away from and could never live up to the perfection of its prequel, since the story of Nell and Colton was not only a truly epic tale of loss, healing and finding love again, but also one of the sexiest books I have ever had the pleasure of reading... and re-reading. Well, I admit I was wrong and I should have trusted Ms Wilder to blow my mind once more. This book was outstanding, unforgettable, so different from the prequel and yet so inspiring in its own right. But we warned, if you are expecting a Nell and Colton sequel, you will be disappointed because while this book follows the same timeline as Falling into You, it has different main characters and theirs is a parallel storyline, but with shared events that deeply affected all the characters and with frequent cross-overs. I will tell you only this, you will not be disappointed. Not for one second.

Our heroine is Becca, Nell's best friend since childhood. She is a shy, quiet, conscientious young girl who never strayed from her responsibilities, always a brilliant student and model daughter to her overprotective parents. The story starts from that moment in Falling into You when Nell stands Jason up on their first date and tells him he should ask her friend Becca out instead because she's always had a crush on him. One date is all it takes for these two teenagers to realise they were made for each other. But their relationship is not rushed, it is timed perfectly, showing us two young people falling in love slowly, naturally, irrevocably. We watch them have all their firsts, mesmerised by their innocence, curiosity, fear, and yet nothing is overdone and even the most innocent of acts such as holding hands has the power of leaving us breathless. Each milestone in their relationship is earned and we see them grow together as individuals, drawing strength from their connection and giving each other the courage to be the people they always wanted to become.

"I wasn't sure where we were or where we were going or what time it was, and I didn't care. I turned my head and met his eyes, and then, with a deep breath, slid my hand underneath his. His eyes widened and his breath hitched, but he didn't hesitate to wind his fingers between mine. He smiled, and everything was better than fine."

Becca's progression from a shy and softly spoken teenager with a speech impediment to a confident woman unafraid to express what she wants was beautifully written. We get to understand what drives her, what stalls her and where her strength comes from. The contrast between the restrained woman that she was in everyday life and the one that would `come out to play' during moments of intimacy with Jason made this character impossible not to love. The fire that was suppressed under her gentle exterior was truly palpable and it floored me that only Jason's love made her comfortable enough to show her true self to him.

"You'd never think it, but my quiet, hyper-intelligent, overachieving, rule-following girlfriend was a voracious, insatiable lover."

But Becca's true strength lies in her empathy and ability to love unconditionally - nothing less could have made her survive the constant heartaches in her life.

Jason, on the other hand, did not have a home life to set strong foundations for the man he ends up becoming. The only thing he learnt to rely on was himself and that he had two choices in life - follow his father's example and become the product of his own upbringing, driven by bitterness over a life he would never end up living, or break the cycle and purposely become the very opposite of his father. Becca's love plays a great role in this, but I believe they are each other's pillars of strength - the perfect yin and yang - and their bond is the only reason they manage to weather the storms of life.

"What if... what if I turn into him? What if I am like him?"

Be prepared to cry, be prepared to scream, be prepared to build a shrine to Jasinda Wilder because this book is going to own you. I have been struggling to pinpoint the reason why these stories move me so deeply, why every scene manipulates my emotions so effortlessly, and I think I have finally found an explanation - Ms Wilder writes from her heart and you can sense that in every single word. This book might appear as just another book about first loves and the lessons learned along the way, but don't be fooled - she will break your heart, sometimes more than once, she will make you remember your own past, your own firsts, your own heartaches, your own hangups, and she will make it all better by giving you a story that you will never forget.

Falling Into Us

Where to start? First off, I would like to say this book deserves 10 stars ★★★★★★★★★★ Because it is THAT AMAZING folks. May I add, more emotional and better than FIY, if it's possible? But it is, well to me at least. I think I loved and enjoyed Becca and Jason's story and POV from things more than Nell,Kyle and Colton. I still love them of course and FIY, but this one, wow. You be the judge when you read ;-)
Falling Into Us is a parallel story line. Meaning, it follows the same timeline, but gravitates on two different characters in the same circle of friends. It is not really anything like Falling Into You. I mean it is, but isn't. The first how much is about Jason, his friends and then there is Becca of course and all of them are tied into Nell's, Kyle's and Colton's story. I loved reading more about Jason, Becca and all their friends. It was awesome getting to see some things from their POV and their eyes, very interesting and they loved their friends deeply. Especially Kyle and Nell. There were soo many little things I loved. One thing Nell's mom and how sweet she is with Jason, Becca and everyone.
Becca, I felt bad for a lot, but in the end I was happy and very proud of her. She is such a great friend and person. I want to say a lot, but I can't give away too much! But I promise, you guys will LOVE IT, even more than FIY! PROMISE! Must read, ladies! ❤❤

PS- J, I Loved all the tiny Twilight references ;-) And loved some songs, mostly all of them. But some more than others, you know which ones ;-) ❤❤ Love you girlie, it was amazing and so proud of you!

A FREAKING AMAZING!!!! If you loved Nell, Kyle and Colton, then you will love Jason and Becca!
This story has it all. Friendship, laughter, hurt, passion, tears, fear, lust, pain and ever lasting love. You will not be disappointed when you read this. The journey that Jason and Becca take is a long one, but one well worth traveling. Along the way you hear more of Kyle, Nell and Colton and a few other characters which affect the main characters like Benny and Kate. If you are looking for a story to smile to, then read this book. If you are looking for a story to laugh with, then read this book. If you are looking a story to cry with, then read this book, it has everything and more. Jasinda out did herself as usual with this story, and I was blessed with an ARC and proud to say if I could give this book 10 stars I would. So please read this...but only after you have read Falling Into You

The diverse uses of data and the increased sharing of data that has arisen as a result of the widespread introduction of data warehouses have exacerbated deficiencies with the quality of data (Ballou). In addition, up to half the cost of creating a data warehouse is attributable to poor data quality. The management of data quality so as to ensure the quality of information products is examined in Wang. The purpose of this book is to alert our IT-MIS-Business professionals to the pervasiveness and criticality of data quality problems. The secondary agenda is to begin to arm the students with approaches and the commitment to overcome these problems. The current authors have a combined list of over 200 published papers on data and information quality.

Written by leading scholars alongside media figures, such as Rhoma Irama and Ishadi SK, the case studies although not focused on theology per se, illuminate how Muslims (and non-Muslims) in Indonesia and Malaysia make sense of their lives within an increasingly pervasive culture of Islamic images, texts, film, songs, and narratives.

I just finished this book and I can't rave enough about it! I finally understand that I don't have to sit and pray for 2 hours every day to be powerful in prayer. I highly recommend this book. It's a must for people who struggle with prayer.

Prayer is FUN - stand in the gap!

Did you ever go to a prayer meeting and where happy when you could finally go home again? Actually, you always knew that you were not an intercessor but just wanted to make sure? Or did you think that prayer is a must because the bible says that we should pray without ceasing but you where not really enjoying it? Then this book was written for YOU! Through this book I found out that there are many kinds of intercessors. To intercede actually means to stand in the gap for someone. The authors (I had the honour to experience Tommi and Beth life) give vivid examples from the bible and from their lives. There are list intercessors (a favourite among pastors) like Ezra, government intercessors like Daniel, prophetic intercessors like Moses, mercy intercessors like Jeremiah, crisis intercessors like David (see Psalms), etc. What are you? I learnt from this book that there is not a pure kind. But every time we get on our prayer bones (knees) we might be the one kind or another kind, maybe a combination. Where is your passion when you pray? It's all right when we spend most of the time weeping tears of identification for the lost. Another day we might do warfare intercession. When we come together, only TOGETHER we pray the heart of God. Only if we all contribute we will have His whole heart; someone brings a list, another tears, another a song, etc. Prayer is FUN, stand in the gap!

Finding the proper armor

So many of us pray without knowing what our strengths. As Dutch Sheets states in the preface, we are going from defining to refining and assigning in these last days of the church before the warrior-bride is called home. If you know how to fit yourself for battle and focus as the authors call us to do, you can use your best armor to withstand satan's arrows while doing battle in prayer for another. This book is an automatic followup to Dutch Sheets' book on Intercessory Prayer and was a "don't lay down until I finish it" type of book. It strengthens any Christian who would read it in their prayer life. We may even use it for a women's ministry study!

This is a modsecurity book ONLY

The description seemed misleading. This book dedicates its entirety to apache modsecurity. Any and all of the defenses are with modsecurity.

So, 5 stars if you wanted a book on modsecurity. I obviously did not.

The defenses were basic and probably well written out, if you use modsecurity and need help understanding it. I personally have no use for this book and a complete waste of money.

Most of us would think 'web application' as our program we built as a web application. Apache is a webserver. I was hoping for a book that might have extra guidelines or thoughts on adding great things to your web apps to defend them.

This book does none of that for me.

So, if you are not looking for mod security info, do not waste money. Seller should add 'modsecurity' only and possibly renamed the book as 'Modsecurity used to defend web apps' or something.

buyer beware.

to top it off, this book is not 'new'...it has scratches all over the cover. If it is new then it was damaged from shipping...

EDIT: I have contacted wiley and a rep will be getting back to me about changing this description from 'great techniques AND some madsecurity code' to 'modsecurity techniques only'

Don't be misled by the small blurb about mod_security...this is all the book is, pure mod_Security.

Personally, if you want to use mod_Security I would highly recommend this book..but if you are looking for this as a companion to the hackers handbooks to beef up your web app security, then you will be completely disappointed and out 30 bucks.

Great security resource for web application developers

While far from scientific, a search of web application security vulnerabilities returns over 2,600,000 results. However you search for it, web applications need to be secured, and insecure web applications are a major problem.

In Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users, author Ryan Barnett provides a highly technical resource for web application developers. All of the over 100 recipes are valuable tips on how to secure web applications.

In the forward to the book, Jeremiah Grossman of WhiteHat Security writes that a web defenders success comes down to understanding a few key points. One of those points is that defenders will find themselves responsible for protecting web suites they did not create and have little or no insight into or control over. That and Grossman's other observations highlight the imperative for organization to ensure that web application security is made an imperative.

Part of the challenge is that today's web sites are becoming more complex, with many interrelated connection, protocol and technologies. While many network infrastructures are a lot more secure; if web applications are not completely locked down, patched and secured, they are simply targets for attackers.

And the challenge is that even if a network is secured, it will still likely allow web traffic to pass through, given that http is perceived as friendly. And given that there is a lot that a firewall can't do; web application defense is a must-have item.
The reality is that securing web sites is difficult. But for those that want to ensure their web sites are as secure as possible, their developers should certainly implement the delicious recipes in Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users.

Very good

It focuses a great deal on Mod Security for Apache; in some ways I wish it could be a bit more diversified.

I found the first part about measuring security to be very useful. It is beneficial to move beyond shock and awe when reporting about security to management. This book provides a way for real numbers that represent the validity of your security efforts.

The Post-Modern Fairy Tale

Along with the rest of the civilized world, my wandering memories often lead me back to two of my favorite childhood movies, "The Neverending Story" and "The Last Unicorn." Practically all I could remember of the latter was some skull yelling "Unicorn! Uuuunicorn!" That image and that voice have left a lingering discomfort in the back of my mind for years. A while back, I found a little time to investigate Michael Ende's novel, "The Neverending Story," and just recently, I managed to come across a copy of "The Last Unicorn," and I couldn't help but read it. In both cases, these novels have more than repayed my childhood memories, giving my adult mind philosophical and literary substance as well as real joy. Peter S. Beagle's 1968 novel, "The Last Unicorn," is much more than a simple fantasy story - though it is rife with magicians, mythical creatures, and all of the customary trappings. It is even more than a complex fantasy story - somehow Beagle enchants us into a timeless place where nothing seems unusual - "The Last Unicorn" creates a space for magic in our modern lives.
The novel begins as a unicorn overhears two hunters riding through her wood - the hunters debate whether unicorns exist anymore. The unicorn begins to wonder if indeed she is the last of her kind, and goes in search of other unicorns. She is caught sleeping by Mommy Fortuna, owner of the Midnight Carnival, who displays the unicorn for a time alongside a real harpy and a motley bunch of meek, hopeless animals who are made, through Fortuna's magic, to resemble other dangerous mythical beasts for the entertainment of travellers, tourists, and townsfolk. Schmendrick, a fairly useless magician, and an assistant to the Midnight Carnival, recognizes the unicorn for what she is, and freeing her, they set off together to find the unicorns. Once they are joined by a woodland dweller named Molly Grue, the company is complete. Their search brings them to the domain of King Haggard, who, along with the demoniacal, but eerily incorporeal Red Bull, seems to have something to do with the disappearance of the unicorns.
Though the novel is a quest, there isn't much real movement - the novel moves from the unicorn's wood, over land to Haggard's castle by the sea, which is where almost half of the novel takes place. The more significant quests here are ones of self-discovery, as the unicorn, Schmendrick, and Prince Lir, King Haggard's heir, must all try to figure out who they are, what they want to be, and how to accomplish their goals without being consumed by existential despair. Related questions the novel poses include speculations on the nature of the hero, on the metafictional nature of the fairy tale as a genre, and what the difference is between evil and self-interest, between love and hatred. "The Last Unicorn" is also a rumination on the nature of interpersonal (or interspecies) relationships, and is in spots as concerned with ecology and the environment as J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."
However, far and away, the most compelling facets of "The Last Unicorn" for me are Beagle's minor touches, minutiae that some people might miss on a first reading. Seemingly meaningless conversations, like the one between the hunters which begins the novel, between Captain Cully and his disaffected latter-day Robin Hoods in the forest, or between a 'married' pair of blue jays betray a depth and attention to detail and a real artistry in Beagle's literary workmanship. They alert us, as certainly as Tolkien's work does, to the fact that we, the novel's readers, live in a prosaic world, divested of magic and enchantments. Beagle's novel shows that creating, living in, and sustaining a fantasy world can be as much work, and can involve as much pain as our own normal daily lives. Indeed, one amazing quality of "The Last Unicorn" is that it hardly differentiates between the normal modern world and that of the fairy tale. One reviewer mentions that the novel takes place in the Middle Ages - is it at all astonishing then, to hear Cully at one point mention the "field-recordings" that will one day be made of his oral poetry while he himself eats a taco?
"The Last Unicorn" has endured for almost 40 years because it manages to imbue things like "field-recordings" with a kind of magical quality that seems as natural as talking birds and butterflies. Beagle also reminds us that we are each heroes of our own stories - whether we stick to the literary conventions of genre or not. The inclusion of subtle anachronisms and metafictional commentaries like these clues us to Beagle's art - the creation of a new kind of fairy tale, one which attempts to make our own world, our own lives, sources of almost limitless wonder and joy, as well as of continuing epic challenges.

The Last Unicorn is one of most astounding books I have ever read. Not only because of the story, which is a fairytale in every sense of the word, but also because of Beagle's flawless writing, which weaves a spell of words and images that I find myself willingly ensnared in every time I open its pages. I find myself lingering over each sentence, each word, and I am astounded by the care with which he tells this tale.
Once upon a time, there was a unicorn. A beautiful unicorn... who was all alone. She sets out on a journey to seek others of her kind and is joined on her travels by a bumbling magician and an old spinster, neither of who are what they first appear to be. Encountering magical monsters, outlaws and suspicious townspeople, the three travelers find themselves at the gate of a forbidding castle wherein lives a cruel king and a gentle prince. It is in the walls of this castle that the truth lies. But can they accept what the truth will bring?
Beagle tells an amazing tale, of love and loss, of heartache and hope. Each of the characters in his work has such life and depth, and I see myself in each and every one of them. From an inept magician who desperately seeks to be more than what he is to the outlaws who cry out with loss of that which they have never known, there is so much life in these few short pages that I find myself reading and rereading each page, afraid lest I miss something. When Schmendrick cries, "I'll make you into a bad poet with dreams!" I want to laugh, but at the same time I want to cry with pity, with unexplainable sorrow for something I can't quite understand and am not sure I want to.
The Last Unicorn is about more than just a quest for unicorns. It is also a story about the things that we love and what we will do - or not do - for that love. It is about what really defines a hero, and what constitutes a happy ending. But most of all, it is about magic. Joy. Sadness. Beauty. It is about all the things we are and all the things we long to be. It is a breathtakingly beautiful story by a wonderful writer, and I recommend it as one of the best books I have ever read.

"The Last Unicorn" comic: a long-time fan's review

If you're contemplating purchasing the comic adaptation of "The Last Unicorn" , chances are that this will not be your first foray into the world created by Peter S. Beagle in his best-known novel. In "The Last Unicorn", a unicorn discovers that she is the last of her kind and sets out on a quest to discover that has become of her kin. If you're like me, you've read the book and watched the movie, and so as a fan you might wonder what this newest incarnation of the story has to offer.

The Last Unicorn comic gathers the 6 separate issues released by IDW publishing into one full color hard-cover volume. From a purely aesthetic standpoint the book design is impeccable, with violet foil lettering on front and back and a classy layout. The six chapters that make up the book are separated by pages that sport the same illustrations that were featured on the covers of the respective single comic issues.

There is immediately something a little more "grown up" about the comic adaptation as opposed to the animated movie. Renae de Liz's style may have much to do with this. Her illustrations tend more toward stylized realism than the far more soft, cartoony style employed in the movie. Ray Dillon's colors are atmospheric and brooding. Characters such as the Harpy Celaeno, Mommy Fortuna, Ruhk and King Haggard are actually frightening to look at in the comic version, while their movie versions are a little more approachable. For those comfortable with the representations of characters such as the unicorn (Lady Amalthea), Schmendrick and Molly Grue shown in the 80's animated movie, the character designs of the comic certainly pay homage to those designs.

What is particularly enjoyable about this adaptation is that plot points and scenes that were in the original novel but omitted from the movie have been included in the comic. There is a magician mentor named Nikos, who turned a male unicorn into a human. As in the novel, Schmendrick is cursed with youth, a side note that never made it into the animated feature. There is a city named Hagsgate again, and Arachne is back in Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival as is "Elli". There is even a single page that alludes to the "blue bird" scene from the novel (in which a pair of married blue birds argue over whether or not the husband bird actually saw a unicorn).

The extras at the end of the book include interviews of both Peters S. Beagle and Peter Gillis, the man who adapted The Last Unicorn into a comic book format. There is a small art gallery in the back that features pieces by guest artists and small thumbnails of the six "alternate" comic book covers done by Frank Stockton. There are also half-page images taken directly from the comic (with the text bubbles removed) so that one may admire the layout of some very beautifully designed pages. These are often too small for my liking, but they are nice "extras".

The comic is *almost* a complete triumph. I say almost because there is one omission that really should have made it into the comic. Once again, King Haggard's four aged men-at-arms are mentioned only in passing dialogue. Much like in the animated movie, the characters are never seen and their small arc and subsequent return to youth is cut from the story. In his interview at the end of the comic, even Peter Gillis laments that these characters were once more cut out of the story due to page restrictions. Truly, it would have made this adaptation even more special to have this rather important plot point addressed in the comic book, even more so because it is left out of the movie. Other slight problems had to do with the panel pacing toward the end and the clunky descriptive text during the battle with the Red Bull. There was an over-use of sentences starting with "And..." that started to feel very redundant. But I feel for the illustrator, who doubtlessly had a challenge shoving as much as possible onto the small amount of additional pages that were added. The page-limit on the comic was reached before the completion of the series. A total of 12 extra pages had to be added... and paid for out-of-pocket--not by IDW.

For fans, the comic is invaluable and does both the novel and the movie justice while offering strengths that are individual to the comic adaptation. It is a generally faithful retelling, obviously drawn and translated from the novel by people who truly cared about the story and the quality of the art. If you are fond of the novel, the movie or both, the graphic novel will be a welcome addition to your collection. Enjoy!

Just excerpts from the book.

I got this because I loved Mindy Kaling's book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). These are just excerpts from that books that are slightly changed. At the end she tacks on a question relating to the text.

For example, she recalls the story of being twice the size of a schoolmate, then asks, "Were you ever twice the size of a friend? What was that like?" It's a shame because I liked the book so much, but I will stick to the The Book of Questions, because these questions just didn't allow for any true conversation.

Mindy Kaling is always a rockstar.

I own both Chuck Klosterman's HYPERtheticals and Mindy Kaling's conversation cards.

I teach a college public speaking class and these types are cards are an excellent tool for class activities. I have students read their card and then go to the front of the room and explain it as an extemporaneous skill building activity. This is often cited as a highlight of the semester because it allows for students to open up and talk to the class without feeling the pressure of having to deliver a prepared speech.
