IN THE SPHERE OF SILENCE was initially conceptualized as a journal to promote and institutionalize the practice of the Sphere of Silence, the single, most powerful tool a human being can use to succeed both in business and in life.
Vijay Eswaran came up with the book to accompany the journal because without the book that expounds on the philosophy behind the Sphere of Silence, many might practice it the way many churchgoers go to Sunday Mass, with nothing in their hearts but the force of obligation which later degenerates to boredom because they do not appreciate the deeper meaning and philosophy and more important the beauty behind the practice.
Vijay Eswaran, wanted a book that will minister to the silent zones of man as an individual wanting to know his relationship with God and the world around him and how this impacts his business. He wanted a book that will not just answer the question – How do I make money? But also the questions – What is the purpose of all this? Where do I go from here?
He wanted to speak to a new generation. A generation that has vision. That knows as much about love as much as they know about profit. From the time we are born, there is a continuous din that hits and assails our senses. It never ceases even when we are asleep. It is a din that cocoons us so much so that we stop hearing the din but not the silence.
Both in times of prosperity and in conditions of panic and depression, we seek peace. But we seek it mainly through the feverish activity of the human mind to no avail. The intensity of growth in the last 400 years has been a virtual leap forward in the evolution of mankind.
Mankind has been adept at creating pleasure and satisfaction for the senses but because they are superficially created, they are neither permanent nor real. We feast our senses on a continuous array of new toys, new scenes, and new pleasures but there is rarely a true, peaceful moment. Hence, one of the most valuable things we seek to find is tranquility and ultimately, silence.
The process of being in the Sphere of Silence leads us to the silence within us. This is a process that goes all the way back to ancient times. This peace is not to dependent on circumstances or external conditions. Great men have found it inside themselves even in the midst of war and luxuriated in its freedom, even in chains.

A Must Read.............Repeatedly!!

Excellent book for someone like me who hates reading. It is not a self help book but more of a constant reminder to do reality checks on my life everyday. It would have taken me so much less time to grow if the book was out 5 years ago. After reading the book I understand so much more how important self reflection is. A key to success on its own for anyone who wants to be on the route to success....financially and spiritually.

An 'Aha!' Moment

Have you ever read something and your mind went 'aha!'?
The year was 1999. For some reason, I found myself working in broadcasting, writing and producing an offbeat teen programme for one of the national television channels. How did I get there, is another long story. The work was fun. Tiring and time consuming. But fun. I made some terrible choices. For instance, I went to a meet and greet with the Benetton Team instead of go karting with the Shell Team (which featured the very modest Michael Schumacher) simply because I thought Giancarlo Fisichella was a hottie. Yes yes, I still cringe when I think about it.
One night while I was editing some footages, someone came up to me and gave me a slim little blue booklet. He said, "You will find this interesting,". I looked at it. It was a copy of keynote address delivered by the (then) Prime Minister of Malaysia at the 1998 ApEC Summit. I let out a sigh. Why did he think I would be interested in reading a 35-page speech about the economic outlook of the Asian region? But it was late at night and there was only so much coffee that you could drink. So I decided to give it a go.
Did you know that a complex idea on a complex subject, can be made so amazingly accessible and relevant when conveyed with the rights words, by the right person?
The next 'aha!' moment occured in 2005. For someone who reads on average of 3 books a week, that's about 900 books later. I saw a copy of 'In the Sphere of Silence' on the table of a colleague. I said to him, "Pretty book,". He answered, "You should read it, it's even prettier on the inside,"
I decided to throw him a curve ball. I asked, "Do you practise this,?". He hesitated a bit before answering. "Yes I try, but it's hard at first because you have to get used to asking yourself frank and personal questions."
I smiled.
In the case of judging a book by its cover, I think my colleague made an excellent judgement.
In the case of being frank, I think he passed with flyng colours.
Come on... how many of us lie awake at night reflecting on the things that you have done that day and yesterday and what you are going to do tomorrow? And how many of us steer off course and wander into the (unintended) realm of petty matters like the gossip you heard at the grapevine or how much the fuel price will increase and then sort of naturally, just fall asleep?
Aha!
The thing about 'In The Sphere of Silence' is that the author did the unthinkable: he took a daily routine that most of us take for granted, mould it into a way of life, and presented it in a sequence that helps guide the thought process and keeps you focussed.
Of course it is hard to ask yourself frank and personal questions. Of course it is hard to admit that you did something wrong when the only person around is yourself. The ego believes what it wants to believe, right?
This is where this little book succeeds. It provokes you to think a little deeper, be a little more transparent than you care to reveal, and most importantly, to learn to understand your actions and its consequences and ultimately, to understand oneself.
It's a remarkably simple, and moving, journey to self awareness. Try it.

Dao De Jing and In the Sphere of Silence

Reading In the Sphere of Silence, I can not help but compare it to Dao De Jing, written by a famous ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Zi. Many people and Institutes worldwide have been studying and practicing Dao De Jing for many many years. The commonality between In the Sphere of Silence and Dao De Jing are perfectly reflected in the common words used by both authors, such as "balance", "harmony", "equilibrium", "love", etc. However I must say that In the Sphere of Silence has expanded Dao De Jing's Philosophy by encouraging one to "set goals", "fight within" which were not easily found in Dao De Jing. Or more precisely I should say that the book, In the Sphere of Silence, has bridged the thinking and practicing of ancient people and that of modern society.
Whether you think you are a philosopher, or an ordinary human being like myself who just simply want to make life more meaningful and fruitful, In the Sphere of Silence is definitely a book worth reading and practicing
