A wonderful and touching story
By rain knits
The first time I read this book was to a third grader. When it finished she sat in silence. Then, with an amazing amount of concern and compasion, she asked if it was a true story. The way the book touched her (and me) was amazing. It is a great book to help children (and adults) see the hardships many immigrants face. It is a wonderful book that can be used in the classroom as the center of a integrated lesson, or just read and discussed. This book is one everyone should read, around Thanksgiving or any time of the year.

Do you wonder how many days it took this family to get to America? Mom and Dad and the boy and girl are coming to America in a big boat. There were many families in the boat. It was a hard trip. Some times they did not have food and they also got scared. Then the thieves took their money and jewels. They finally reached to a new place. They celebrated Thanksgiving with the people in the new country. I think they don't have to be afraid of new things. I think this book is good for people who were coming to America. This book is like my story I felt very sad even though I was with my sister just like the little girl. In the story I started to be happy when I saw my mom and dad. The illustrations gives an idea of what it was like coming to America. If you are one of those people who are new to America read this book you will enjoy it. By Cindy L

Fabulous school reading material for Thanksgiving

Eve Bunting has managed to describe at a child's level the fear, anticipation and exhaustion that often accompanied many of our ancestors as they came to America. This book is a reminder of the people who both came before us and those that still come with hope to America.
It is a beautiful, meaningful and heartwarming book to share with elementary students and families either during the Thanksgiving season or while studying history and immigration.

About the Author

Ellen K. Cromley is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington. Previously, she was Professor of Geography at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. Dr. Cromley’s research is primarily concerned with geographical patterns of health and disease, health facility location, and GIS design to support public health surveillance and intervention programs. She has published articles in geography, epidemiology, public health, and health services journals. Sara L. McLafferty is Professor of Geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In her research she explores the use of spatial statistical methods and GIS for understanding health and social issues in cities, as well as gender and racial disparities in geographical access to services and employment opportunities. Dr. McLafferty has published articles in geography, epidemiology, and urban studies journals and is an Associate Editor of the journal Health and Place.

Superbly written true crime

It's been many, many years since I've stayed up all night to finish a book, but this one did it for me.
Ann Rule is in top form in this book; her writing is quite well done, unlike many in the true crime genre. The book flows, and while no stone is left unturned, one doesn't feel exhausted and distracted by detail.
At first, I wasn't interested in purchasing this book, believing that since the case received a lot of national publicity and was so recent, I'd know beforehand what I'd read. But I was utterly wrong.
This is really Ann Rule's best book yet, and one of the best books I've ever read in true crime.

Detailed and insightful!

During the time covered in this book I worked as a federal law enforcement officer with an office at the Byrne Courthouse at 6th & Market Streets in Philadelphia, PA. I worked with most of the agencies mentioned by the author and I found the book gave me even more information than I already knew. The author really painted a portrait that makes one want to empathize even more with the Fahey family and her once hoped-to-be husband Mike. What a great piece of research and writing.

Deeply Nuanced Reporting

I am a burned-out former paralegal from Wilmington, Delaware. I knew Thomas Capano and Anne Marie Fahey. I followed the trial closely, and I have read all four true crime books based on this case. Even though Ms. Rule is not a local reporter, her understanding of Wilmington's unique political and social climate is much deeper and more nuanced than any of the other authors'. I strongly recommend this book, which is both a clear-eyed study of this case and a real pleasure to read -- fast-moving and yet deeply felt.
