About the Author
David Kroenke has been a sailor since 1971 and currently owns a Mason 44. He has cruised the West Coast extensively, roamed the Inside Passage and the coast of British Columbia, and sailed to Mexico and back. His next Big Trip is a voyage to the Marquesas. Although he holds a Ph.D. in engineering, he claims his chief qualification for writing "Know Your Boat" is the self-education process he undertook after spending piles of money in boatyards.

If you have to read this for your class I'd be sorry for you

This textbook is poorly organized. It may confuse you in so many ways.
The author introduces some abbreviated words before he actually introduces them.
I have to admit that my understanding of MIS was not that great and neither was my reading skill. However, if he was a good author I think he should have rephrased to explain terminologies instead of using the same words to define them and hoping that readers would understand.
On top on that examples he gives us are not really what most of us(I mean, people who are learning MIS for the first time) are familiar with and therefore, it is sometimes difficult to picture them.
He must be a knowledgeable person but I do not think he is a good author.
I really wish that the publishing company reviewed carefully and improved the contents before they published this book.

Very helpful.

This textbook is well written. It breaks down MIS to the most simplistic of terms so that there isn't much confusion. The examples used reflect today's complex world. The chapters read easily and quickly. On top of this, Professor McKinney was one of my graduate professors and would remind you of Bill Nye, the Science guy. He was one of the most creative, cool, and well liked professors at Bowling Green State University. Most of my cohorts would also vouch for that.

Requires Excellent Instructor - Loaded with Info!

Loaded with information, facts and solid information. Suggest to buy only the older edition - you will be happier and wealthier.
Info is overwhelming without a thorough - clear, understandable instructor (most likely with hands on MIS experience). $5.00
is a good deal as it has no resale value ($1.50 this year?) I would never spend current edition prices for it though.

Excellent documentation

Few people discuss the excellent documentation and cold, hard statistics Medved supplies - perhaps because they are irrefutable. And also because it's easier to make subtle charges of racism and bigotry. One reviewer even claimed Medved wants a world where everyone is white and Christian - Medved is Jewish and discusses his religion at length in the book!!! But then, you'd have to actually READ the book to know that...
Medved shows beyond the shadow of a doubt that Hollywood is more interested in what it thinks of itself than in anything else - true art or even money.
Strange that many of the same movie buffs who decry the dumbing-down of film within the past 15 years suddenly rush to defend Hollywood (even the trash!) in order to avoid agreeing with Medved.
An excellent book - an excellent tool for analyzing American culture.

Read The Book Hollywood Doesn't Want You To Read

I came to a bookstore shortly after this book was released with $25 in my wallet, which was intended for another book. I flipped through "Hollywood vs. America" and not only couldn't I put it down, I decided that I owed it to Medved to buy the book at full list price, before it went on sale. Finally, someone with some clout was saying what I had been saying for years about show business and the people in charge.
A previous reviewer faulted Medved for detailing a laundry list of vomit and urination scenes, but this is exactly what is necessary to illustrate how far "entertainment" has fallen. True humor and plot development is abandoned in favor of "realistic" special effects gore, more F-words, and bodily function gags.
Especially important is his illustration of the way showbiz takes great pains to prop up evil religious straw-men/women for the purpose of demonizing traditional religion per se. He also shows how "dramatic license" is used to distort the lives of actual religious figures so that their faith is unrecognizable. Medved wrote this seven years before NBC's outrageously inaccurate and blasphemous "Noah's Ark."
If you are a moviegoer, read this book. Peek into the slaughterhouse and see what's in the sausage they feed you.

Well known movie critic resigns from doing so, because of his strong conviction that Hollywood is unwilling to be responsible cultural contributor.
Leaning even more to the dangerous trends Medved exposes in this book in 1992, Hollywood does not feel any responsibility to nation's moral troubles, only freedoms which they certainly are given under our laws.
It's only entertainment? Of the foulest, sickest kind. History will concur with Medved that this increasingly slippery slope has led all other leading civilizations to decay, disease and collapse. Can we be of such historic stuff?
Medved provides convincing evidence in this, and most disturbing is Hollywood's seeming "don't care" attitude.
Suffice recent stars stance on Iraq as infuriating most of country's citizens.
More like Medved and this reviewer, should boycott most of Hollywood. Wake up America, thanks Mike for this helpful classic work.

The main control program solution is prepared in C language using CodevisionAVR ® software. In addition, the schematic of all the hardware used in project is provided in the text.
Chapter 2 is devoted to redesigning the same lift system using the Arduino Mega development board, which is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega2560 microcontroller.

This project is about the model of a simple lift or elevator for a building, which is assumed to have four floors. Each floor has its own illuminated push button to call and send the elevator to the desired location. The door is emulated with the use of a small 5V DC motor which stays open for 5 seconds, and then closing the door, making the elevator ready to execute the given command. Also, a 5V DC motor is used to emulate a hoist motor, which rotates a small disk clockwise or anticlockwise over four slotted optocouplers to generate stop signals. The code generated for this small 4 Floor lift system has been adapted to control the same system for an Arduino board. You are presented with a step-by-step guide that will aid in coming up with the hardware and software for the implementation of the lift system. My past experience has lead to the writing of this text. I thought it was not a bad idea to show how the same design guides can be used to implement the same system, this time with a Microcontroller instead. Being able to create the control software for a simple elevator system in the complexity that this project provides will sure demonstrate you know what you are talking about when it comes to programming any kind of microcontroller.

An Effective Approach to Effective Communication in Japanese

I've been studying Japanese on and off over the years since taking it in college. I own and have used most of the popular textbooks out there. I wish I had this book when I was starting out, as it could have saved me a lot of time.

The book uses a concise and direct approach to learning Japanese grammar that is both unique and effective. It breaks down conversational grammar into 142 sentence structures with approx 1,200 example sentences. The grammar contained in this book is roughly the equivalent of Ganki 1 + 2, or other Intro / Intermediate Japanese textbooks. The vocabulary used in the book is either essential or common and words are used in examples more than once.

If you are a fan of flashcards or spaced repetition, then this book is perfect for you, as it is formatted in a way that will work very well with those learning methods.

For me, a really helpful aid

I have renewed my study of Japanese independently after 3 years classroom study many years ago. This time I'm focusing just on speech competency (at 67 I don't have enough years left to become literate in Japanese, and I want to be able to function in day-to-day Japan). This limits the usefulness of many self-teaching language programs, which integrate reading and writing into their approach, so I have been hopping around among various offerings, all of which emphasize different structures and vocabulary. This book has helped greatly to organize and categorize the various sentence patterns I have encountered. I am probably at intermediate level of competency at present, and I find the book suits me perfectly. I doubt it would work for someone who does not already have a background in Japanese grammar. It is written in romaji as well as Japanese, so I am able to use it without being able to read kanji and kana.

Great book for any beginner

This book is for someone between the absolute beginner and an intermediate student of Japanese. Your options for the sentence patterns are given in Romaji or Kanji. There are no kana only sentences, though a serious student should be trying to learn Kanji anyways, and the romaji gives you the readings fine.

Personally I use this book to put sentences into the free digital flashcard system called Anki. I don't necessarily use it for it's initial purpose, which is to figure out how to state or reply to a specific sentence pattern. I think it works great as a resource of Japanese sentences to memorize.

"First, and hopefully the worst..."

A reviewer in India characterized this book as “the first, and hopefully the worst” biography of Nooyi. It's a slim volume, and most of its content can be found elsewhere. The book’s major strengths are that it puts more information about Nooyi’s life in one place than I’ve seen anywhere else, and it includes comments from people who knew Nooyi in her youth that may (or may not) represent original research by the author. There’s no way to know, because the author gives us no information about her sources or how she put the book together. The work contains no footnotes or references. As best I can tell, the author (identified only as a lawyer and writer in Delhi) worked almost entirely from public sources. Nooyi deserves a better biography, and I’m hoping someone will come along to do one. For now, this is the best there is.

It's a great story, no doubt, but this is just poorly written. It reads more like a book report from a high school freshman than a biography written by a professional writer. Still, Nooyi's story is captivating enough that it is worth trudging through the elementary sentence structure.

Furedi's "Power of Reading"' deals with the history of reading, how we read, and especially with attitudes towards reading.
Furedi is particularly opposed to the post-modernists who disparage writing in favor of oral culture, those who belittle the importance of reading. Despite the title, he does not really engage with e-reading or Twitter.
Those interested will also like Alberto Manguel's "History of Reading", and Stanislas Dehaene's "Reading in the Brain" on its physiology.

The tropical region covers a significant proportion of the globe, and yet its architecture receives relatively little outside comment or exposure. Dispersed widely throughout the world, the region incorporates areas as far-flung as the Caribbean islands, India, South-East Asia, and large parts of Australia, Africa and South and Central America. Despite their great cultural diversity, these areas share both climatic and ecological factors, as well as a post-colonial condition and the pressures of modernization in the world of globalization. Architects' reactions to the tropical context are as varied as the region is diverse.
Tropical Architecture brings together architects and critics from throughout the tropical region, examining the implications of the opposing forces of tradition and innovation and the struggle between global and local order. Among the issues covered are sustainability, bio- and cultural diversity, micro-climatic control and technology and multi-disciplinary design. The argument centres on Critical Regionalism, a concept introduced into the architectural debate in the early 1980s by two of the book's co-authors, Tzonis and Lefaivre. This is not a style but rather an approach to architecture that asks for design to be conceived in response to the needs and opportunities of a specific region - although it is not inherently opposed to global potentials. The theoretical debate is backed up by case studies of a range of projects, from small-scale designs using minimal technology to super-sophisticated, high-tech solutions, and from schemes that look to environmental comfort to ones concerned with issues of symbolism and memory. It is out of this multiplicity of approaches that the general global lesson of Critical Regionalism as applied to tropical architecture is to be found.

About the Author
ALEXANDER TZONIS is Professor of Architectural Theory at the TUDelft and director of Design Knowledge Systems Research Center. Among his books are Towards a Non-Oppressive Environment (I-Press/MIT Press, 1972) and Hermes and the Golden Thinking Machine (Bradford/MIT Press, 1990). He has also co-authored several books with Liane Lefaivre, including Classical Architecture (MIT Press, 1986) and the AIA prize-winning Architecture in Europe since 1968 (Thames Hudson, 1992).
LIANE LEFAIVRE is a researcher at the DKS Center at the TUDelft. She has authored prize-winning scholarly books on the Renaissance and Enlightenment, among them the AIA award-winning Leon Battista Alberti's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (MIT Press, 1997). She is a contributing editor of Architecture magazine in New York and has written widely on contemporary architecture, in particular on dirty realism.
BRUNO STAGNO, a practising architect in San Jose, Costa Rica, studies in Santiage, Chile and Paris and is one of the most eminent architects of South America today. He is Director of the Institute for Tropical Architecture, San Jose. His work has been published in Bruno Stagno: An Architect in the Tropics (Asia Design Forum Publications, 1999). It was Stagno's initiative to invite leading architects from the tropical region to enter a discussion that served as a point of departure of the present book. In 1997 he was given the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development Award.

This collaborative effects breaks the back on often overlooked issues of globalization. Tzonis brings the books into focus, creating layers of comparisons between conditions and countries otherwise unrelated. As well the book becomes the highlight on some unknown but rather talented architects working within a space cultured by globalization.
