Will Lafferty and Kenny Scalia are both having sort of a day. Will gets fired for letting fifth graders read Harry Potter, and Kenny finds his boyfriend and his sex toys in bed with a complete stranger. When Will knocks over Kenny's trash can—and strews Kenny's personal business all over the street—it feels like the perfect craptastic climax to the sewage of suckage that has rained down on them both.

But ever-friendly, ever-kind Will asks snarky Kenny out for a beer—God knows they both need one—and two amazing things occur: Kenny discovers talking to Will might be the best form of intercourse ever, and Will discovers he's gay.

Their unlikely friendship seems like the perfect platonic match until Will reveals how very much more he’s been feeling for Kenny almost since the beginning. But Kenny’s worried. Will’s newfound sexuality is bright and glittery and shiny, but what happens when that wears off? Is Will's infatuation with Kenny strong enough to stay real?

Review
"Lane's new novel is sweet with a generous dose of spice as a man discovers his true sexuality and forever love. " RT Book Reviews "I really enjoyed the storytelling aspect of Shiny as well as the pacing, which was refreshing and unique and told in present and past tense between the two heroes."  HEA Book Blog USA Today

Shiny is a hit !!!
By grammy1
Again I have to say Amy Lane is layin’ low just waiting to pounce. After her last few this fall and winter with Going Up, Behind the Curtain and now Shiny I definitely am afraid. You remember Amy Lane????? The stock for Kleenex, vodka and wine went up immensely the last few years. She is on a roll with some really sweet love stories and I hear the Jaws music playing in the background… Dun Dun….

Shiny is a wonderful lighthearted story about the meeting of Will Lafferty and Kenny Scallia. How did they meet you ask????? Well they explain it together to Will’s Aunt Nina at her wedding reception. Will is hesitant to tell the story and blushes, but Kenny sits up as Nina says she will keep the cake and punch coming (by delivery of her niece Ashley) as Kenny pipes up and says to Nina “Okay sweetcheeks, but I’ve got to tell you she’s going to be run off her little tuchee because a lot of this story is not suitable for children”

Kenny begins….It all started when I got home early one day to surprise my boyfriend at lunchtime….the scene is one you would expect, finding your lover with someone in your bed. But worse is one of our ‘toys’ is involved as well. Kenny is incensed and gathers all of them up, taking them to the garbage can in front of his home, dumping them on top of the pile of garbage. That is after he throws out his ex and the stranger in his bed. His ex tried to talk to him, and Kenny’s reply was ‘well Gif something else came along….something more shiny.’

Nina now asks what William was doing while Kenny was disposing the plugs, rings and penises….William replies “getting fired” ….I was teaching in a private church school and let the 5th graders read Harry Potter. Leaving the school after packing up his car, his girlfriend Denise calls his cell and with her screaming about his getting fired the car just seemed to hit the garbage can and ‘stuff ’ fell out. He got out and was mesmerized by a shiny phallus on the ground and went to touch it when a voice said behind him….ahem you might not want to touch that…..Hence the meeting of Will and Kenny !

It seemed right for Will to ask Kenny out for a beer….For both, their day couldn’t be any worse. What could happen over a beer?????

Amy you have done it again, your wit and sense of humor blossoms in Kenny ‘s character giving him quick wit and sarcastic personality that gives the reader a great love story as well as a fun read. I actually was laughing out loud reading an Amy Lane book !!!! Imagine that. Loved Will and Kenny together what a compliment of personalities….. Cannot wait for your next or dare I say it….am scared.

A light, fun read from one of my favorite authors.

An Amy Lane book sans angst??? It happened folks, it well and truly happened! This is officially the most marshmallowy, happy-family, easy-peasy Amy Lane book that I have ever read.

I have to start by giving Amy Lane a round of applause. This woman is so versatile. She can write sci-fi, fantasy, contemporaries, heavy stuff, dark stuff, and, now, romances that are light as a feather. I, for one, tend to be a fan of her heavier stuff, but that's just me.

"Shiny!" was a great comfort read. You know, when you just want a book about being happy to make you happy. Like the title, this book is filled with exclamation marks and emphatic sentences. This isn't a GFY/OFY where the main character agonizes over his sexuality. Oh no, once Will discovers his sexual preferences, it is happy, easy acceptance. It is exciting, upbeat, and, well, shiny!

Like many of her books, the book is about a teacher, which is subject near and dear to Ms. Amy Lane's heart with her history in the field. I liked how the romance developed and the touches of humor throughout the book.

What I didn't love as much was the format. It starts off in the present and flashes back to when Will and Kenny first met. The whole book is told in back and forth flashback-type vignettes, which isn't my favorite way to tell a story. I also don't love exclamation marks in my reading material, for some reason. It reads as sort of juvenile, which is completely ironic because I love using exclamation marks in my reviews (!!).

Overall, this book was sweet and fun and different from other Amy Lane's that I have read. While it won't rank among my favorites by her, it is a cute, sexy read for times when you just need a light story to take your mind off of real life.

Another hit from Amy Lane!

Amy Lane can write light and fluffy or she can write heartbreaking and angsty. I don't care, I'll probably love it either way.

This was a dose of Amy Lane-lite and it was so darn adorable. Just look at the cover. How can this not be adorable?

The meeting of Kenny and Will is just like the cover suggests. Will runs into Kenny's trash can as he was outside in his boxers, throwing away used sex toys. Because he just caught his boyfriend using them with the guy he was cheating on Kenny with. Gross. Not too long after they meet and hang out, Will realizes that he is gay. Not only is Will gay, but he's got the hots for this guy he just met.

I wouldn't call this a gay for you, or even an out for you, as there wasn't any sort of internal struggle with Will. It was like a light bulb was turned on, a big gay light bulb, when he realized what his problem with finding a girlfriend has been his whole life. He was looking in the wrong place. So, he discovered he liked boys and that was that. He wanted Kenny in his life and his bed, for good.

I just adored Will and Kenny. They were so sweet and cute together and their chemistry was off the charts. Since they did form a lasting friendship first, once the smexin' started happening, oh boy, they were so ready for it.

The story was told in a sequence of flashback scenes which I thought made the story more enjoyable. I was able to see where they ended up as they were telling their story of how they got their HEA. All while at a wedding, no less, which only added to the sweetness of it all.

So, another hit from Amy Lane. SHINY! is just a happy book and it made me feel happy to read it. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
