About the Author
Susan I. Spieth graduated from West Point in 1985 and served five years in the Army before attending Seminary. She earned a Master of Divinity degree and is ordained in the United Methodist Church. She served five churches as Pastor/Associate Pastor for seventeen years. Susan and her husband have two children and live in Seattle, WA. Area Bird is her second novel in the Gray Girl series.

Amazing sequel to Gray Girl

Area Bird is the second book in the Gray Girl series. It takes up where Gray Girl leaves off at the beginning of Jan Wishart's second year at the West Point Military Academy. The year is 1982 and women have only been admitted to West Point since 1976. The first sentence, "She almost didn't see the car go over the cliff" sets the stage for the book. Once again Jan is thrust headfirst into the problem of being female in "the world's largest frat house." Jan is growing and maturing as she overcomes challenges through the year, but also learning about her own character and a few of her flaws. If you like military fiction or fiction that really gets to the heart of the characters, you will love Area Bird.

Such an emotional journey back in time!

Let me start by saying I graduated from West Point with Susan Spieth, the author, so I'm keenly aware of the details and settings in her books. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, "Gray Girl", and was excited to read this second installment. When it arrived two days ago, I was in the middle of another book and wasn't planning to begin reading it until I'd finished it. But I peaked inside, and once I started reading, I was hooked. I quickly became involved with the characters and couldn't put it down. The plot was well-developed and contained lots of interesting sub-plots and twists, and it moved quickly. I almost couldn't read it quickly enough, I wanted so badly to find out what happened next!
I've got to say, it really took me back. Details I've forgotten (how the heck does she remember so many?!) -- the barracks, the academic buildings, the mess hall, the schedules, the people... At any time I felt I could look up to find the CQ standing in my doorway. I was able to tie so many events and people to some I knew from my time there -- such a flood of emotions and memories. Unreal!
Needless to say, I enjoyed this book even more than the first. Susan really "got her legs under her" with this one. When do I get to relive cow year?! How long until the next book in the "Gray Girl" series?! Let's go, Susan, it can't come quickly enough!

An exciting and thought provoking mystery

I placed my order for Area Bird as soon as it became available; when it came, I started reading and essentially did not put it down until I finished. To say the book is gripping is an understatement ! The characters are well developed and believable. The plot is fast paced and well developed. The women had to endure some situations which would test them in all ways.
The end was totally unexpected.
I am already looking forward to Jan's next year.
