Raj R. Patel, M.D. is a resident physician interested in how nutrition can help prevent chronic disease. He scoured the scientific literature on diet and learned what the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet and other traditional cuisines are to human health. His research eventually led him to write "The Healthy Indian Diet." He lives in Houston.

Anuja Balasubramanian and Hetal Jannu, co-founders of ShowMeTheCurry.com, use their step-by-step cooking videos to guide viewers to create delicious and healthy Indian cuisine at home. a perfect find

I got married just two years ago, and my wife and I are finally trying to make the shift from a twenty-something lifestyle to a thirty-something lifestyle. A big part of that has been eating at home more. We were both raised in Indian households, are both vegetarian, and both love Indian food. However, we are not experienced cooks. We have a lot to learn, and more importantly, we want to start forging healthy cooking habits now. Whenever our parents tell us old Indian "truisms" such as "you need more butter in your diet" it's very difficult to determine what's actually a healthy fact especially when you see many overweight Indian adults (even vegetarians).

This book was the perfect find. By reading it, we've gotten a better understanding of the newer science explaining what makes food healthy, and how to incorporate that understanding into Indian food. And since the author is actually a doctor, he's able to bring his medical background to analyze the merits of an Indian diet, something I've never seen before. It's like having a fact checker for all of my mom's home-made theories.

Reading the book has helped us make healthier choices while still enjoying the richness of Indian food. The book carries recipes, but it's not a traditional cook book. Any one book that covers Indian food as diverse as dosas, Bengali fish curry, and Gujarati daar, would have to be five times larger to be comprehensive. Instead, the book seems to aim towards providing a sampling of recipes that along with the explanations in the first half, give readers the tools necessary to make adjustments to all of their dishes. The book has been helping my wife and me make appropriate adjustments to our mother's recipes so we still enjoy the foods that we grew up with but in a more healthy way.

Great Book!

I thought this book was a very interesting read. The first part of the book focuses on the science of diseases that can be affected by diet and breaks down food and how it affects your body. I feel like the author did a really good job of putting in details but still making the book understandable for a regular person. The second part of the book focuses on the parts of a Indian diet and how to make them healthy. The recipes are great and simple to prepare. I would really recommend this book to anybody interested in knowing how what you eat affects your body and to those who want to make some healthy (and yet tasty) Indian food!

Very Interesting Read!

This book is a great read for those that love food yet attempt to maintain good health! The author's detailed research and knowledge was consistently depicted when explaining how different foods can prevent and reduce the risk of disease and increase health, advice definitely worth passing on to my parents. The book explains how fruits, veggies, nuts, spices, whole grains, oils, and even ghee can be a part of the healthy Indian diet! I am inspired to start cooking again!
